Pontiacs

Wow Rich.
That 2+2 Is still for sale.

You asked whats the best year GTO ??
Everyone has a different answer.
I like the original 1964 GTO.
Grumpy 1965 GTO .

Think Midnight Blue.
Post something for You later Rich

The correct Pontiac Cylinder head code on the 1972 Lemas Rich.
For the 455 should be 7M5.
From my memory.

I've seen "6X" listed for heads - anything significant about that?
When ever I see a 64 GTO my first thoughts are if it's a real GTO - PHS says about 3 out of every 5 1964 GTOs you could find are not genuine (less for 65s). I would like to get a 65 rag-top GTO In Black with a Red interior/Black top. I want it capable of running mid-12 sec (naturally breathing, no NO2) and super street friendly - no hood mods either.

Pontiac raised & lowered static compression ratio by varying combustion chamber volume Rich. Many different cylinder head castings were produced. May seem similar all but there are distinct performance flow characteristics to each.
Combustion chambers in all were fully machined.
Unique Pontiac only feauture.

6X heads were used from late 1975 to 1979 on Pontiac 350 & 400 ci V8.
Millions were produced
Most of the desirable performance heads OEM Produced were scrapped out in 1970's & 80's as cars aged. Only collectors like me saved them.
Many worth 1k to $10-15k per pair.
Have to know your stuff with Pontiacs.
Internet info often incorrect.
I have been at it since 1987.
I have a photographic memory . And recall all I have seen, read, touched, built, turned wrenches on, driven, Or Raced.
Let me know what you find.
Getting a 1965 GTO into 12's easy for me.
High 9's . Been there.
Like 8's or 7's. Takes Real $$$$$.

Thanks Brian

Is there a listing of these rare heads somewhere? The large valve 13, 15, 16 48 62, 66 96 and #670 - there must be some publication or website containing SOME help. Is the "Y" block an H.O. 455 block or just what every Pontiac 455 is called? I'm not looking to make money in Pontiac parts, I'm just starting to investigate the possibility of assembling a sharp Pontiac

Check out Wallace Racing. Com Rich.
Grumpy Refers us there for racing calculators often.
Its actually all Pontiac site.
Been going there myself since 2004-05.
Much to learn about Pontiacs.
Wallace Racing an Excellent start.
GTO all pretty similar parts interchange per body style.
The early 1969 -74 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am each model tear had speicali parts each.
Take a 1000 pages at least to document. All.

455 HO Had factory 4-bolt main caps.
Difficult to find & expensive to buy.
Couple Grand to start typical.
Y block is 2-bolt mains from my memory.
The very rare 1973 SD 455 4-bolt main block is rarest of all 455's.
Worth around $5k low.
High around $15k to right owner with matching Vehicle VIN Stamped & not cloned stamped.
Factory VIN Stamed in near all Pontiac engines.
Near impossible to do by hand.
Too tiny & stamps don't exist no longer.

we have had several good Pontiac engine builds ,in my area , Ive helped on several, over the last couple dozen years, especially since the aluminum aftermarket heads, and much better connecting rods have been available
I can assure you that the newer edelbrock heads and single plane intake can make a huge improvement over what used to be available.
just keep in mind that the 2957 edelbrock intake pictured below is designed for operation in the 3500 rpm-7000 rpm, and while it will provide significantly more airflow and power if its matched to a cam with at least about 230 duration and heads that can flow well in excess of 270 cfm at .600 lift at a cost of some lower rpm responsiveness

I want The 1969 Pontiac Ram Air V engine Grumpy.
I know where there are a couple of them.
Just touching one with my bare hands was an Honor.
Like finding an all original 1967-69 L-88 BBC.
Just 69 were built of the RA5.

Get The Cylinder Head Casting numbers off the 1968 Catalina Roadster Today Richard.
Should be a 2-digit code like "62" - "16", ect.
You likely have the smaller 1.96" Intake Valve heads.
Hi Po Heads had 2.11" Intake Valves with 1.77" Exhaust.
Does not matter much because your not Drag Racing.
Engine has Brute torque Either Way.

1965-79 Heads interchange other than 301 Pontiac .

1969-70 Pontiac Ram Air 4 Unique.
3- digit coding.
1961-72 455 HO 3-Digit coding too.

The Center exhaust ports typical on 1966-79 Pontiac D-port heads typical .
The passenger side may be hard to see with the A/C Compressor in place.
The Drivers side is covered up with a Tin Shield for the air cleaner hot air stove.
Remove the Tin shield.
Just 4 bolts and nuts hold it on.

Sometimes you can see the Head Casting number just pulling the Flexable pipe free from the Tin shield.

1969 & 70 Ram Air 4 the 722 & 614 Respective is on the End Exhaust Port.
Drivers side its on #1 port.
Passenger its on #8 exhaust port.

1971-72 HO Similar .
197 & 7F6 Respective.

1973-74 SD-455 "16" Is casted on center exhaust ports. No mistaking....Look like 1970 Ram Air 4 shape exterior.
