I've never seen a u-joint removed or replaced, any tips"

it helps to have the correct tools, like a hydraulic press,
and or tools like a screw thread press , designed to remove u-joints,
use of a hydraulic press is recommended, as it is generally easier.

don't beat them with a hammer it almost always results in damage, use a tool or press.
use of MOLY BASE GREASE HELPS PROLONG U-JOINT LIFE
on some u-joints soaking them with a penetrating spray oil and use of a propane torch to heat and cool the u-joint intermittently
and repeatedly will make u-joint removal and replacement far easier
a mix of 50% MARVEL MYSTERY OIL, AND 50% ACETONE makes a good lubricant to free stuck u-joints

just a tip, heating a stuck bolt or U-JOINT with a torch, and cooling it with a liberal soak down , in penetrating oil several times, in succession then soaking it down and letting it sit over night has frequently made the job of loosening stuck threads many times.

(3) spray with OR A GOOD PENETRATING OIL like pb blaster / liquid wrench, freealloil etc. and tap frequently and lightly with a hammer on the broken stud or bolt to allow vibration to let the penetrating oil seep into the threads if it can,

(3) spray with

you might want to try this I found it works even better than most common penetrating oil sprays

(4) wait 5 minutes MINIMUM and RE-SPRAY with

yes that does mean the cans only good for a couple jammed threads

Q: What causes an exhaust manifold stud/bolt to break?
