yeah the guys produced impressive results, and knew how to build engines and tune,
I grew up reading ABOUT EVERYTHING EVER PRINTED RELATED TO ENGINE BUILDING,
BY SMOKEY YUNICK, JOHNSON, YATES, KEITH DARTON,and others
and talking to several guys like BOBBY JOHNS,FIREBALL ROBERTS,
hanging out at CRANE CAMS while they were still on dixie in halandale
https://www.pbase.com/donboyd/image/94649615/large
but theres not a single one of the old guys that would not have jumped,
with both feet onto todays digital tuning and sensor read outs if the technology,
had existed too take advantage of back in the day

I think Smokey Yunick is one of my Favorite Racing Hero's Personalities.
Broke every rule possible to Win Grumpy.

yeah I loved the 7/8th size chevelle for nascar to reduce drag and the basket ball in the gas tank that got deflated after the tank volume was checked and certified and the 1" tightly coil fuel lines that held several gallons of extra fuel, etc.

The Pontiacs He built for NASCAR all had the flywheels lighting holes rifled drilled hid.
From outer circumference to the flywheel flange. Dummy steel plugs pressed in.

I never heard about the basketball. Clever.
To add another, lead shot filling the frame rails. Got dumped on pit road. Run the race with a lighter car.

I agree with AutoWiz, along with your longer rods, and the overlap of your cam, I think bringing the base timing down would improve your tune. I didn’t realize your base timing was that high! 12 is usually the highest 1 would want to go. 20 total at idle sounds about right. I usually don’t want it past 22 degrees advance total!

Either Grumpy Jenkins or Dale Ernhardt (I think) said if you aint cheatin' then you aint racin'.

Rick has a more Powerfull engine he built in his T-bucket.

The test....put a bottle of water on the edge off the air cleaner.
Find out how clean the engine is hitting on all 8 cylinders.

No vacuum advance at all with a Vertex magneto.
No springs in the the advance mechanism.
It's a special unique stepped pendulum stacked weight assembly you hand file and test on a Sun Distributor machine to dial it in perfect.

I was chasing my tail for 2 years Rick.....It was in the Street Avenger Emulsion Circuits all along for me.
Just got back from a ride to the gas station to get my pack of cigarettes....my bad habit.
Wow...that #9380.

Grumpy has tons of Good tuning info here...search I found it.

Any progress Rick?
Been waiting for ambient temps over 95, then I can go for a 1 hour cruise at 70 mph to see if I
have any detonation problems still. As far as acceleration at WOT, I think it's going to be too
close to call without a time slip, but I can have fun trying !!! Yeehaw!!!

We don't have roads like that in the concrete jungle. just asphalt, shoulders and concrete barriers. I gotta find an on or off ramp to get that kind of action going where I live.
