think thru your shop and car security issues

I just got off the phone with a highly upset acquaintance of mine from several years ago, Id built him a killer 496 big block for his 1969 corvette and he was looking to find a few parts to duplicate that engine as he really loved the car, but it seems that several months ago he had returned from a outing that took him out of town for the weekend to find his garage/shop had been broken into in his absence and most of his tools, engine parts and his 30 year project corvette had been stolen, the burnt husk of the corvette body and frame minus the wheels and drive train were later recovered a couple days later in a vacant lot in an area of town known to have several chop shops.
now he lives on a 15 acre lot in a rural area so he had a locked fence and gate, but no really close neighbors that would have really noticed much, as his homes on a lot with a great many trees blocking easy site of his home and shop. .
the thieves had cut his phone lines to the house before busting into his house and garage and partly because he had NOT gotten the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED,wireless auto dial cell phone feature that costs a bit more ,the act was effective in giving the thieves ample time to strip his shop, the cops estimated that it took a fairly large rental box truck and a car trailer to move all his tools and the car after looking at photos of his shop.
the cops estimated even with several guys it would have taken over 20-30 minutes to strip his shop and move and load his car, which was not in running condition at the time of the theft.
the thieves had simply ripped off the side door hinges with an axe from appearances.
now obviously you can,t prevent all thefts, and being paranoid all the time sucks, but you can make things far more difficult, for thieves and he strongly suspects when they find the thieves if they ever do, that they were people that know him from the local track or machine shops, or speed shops , remember in most cases it doesn,t take a great deal of research to locate your address if someone has your check or phone number.
motion detectors, auto dial cell phone alarms , keeping a dog, maintaining friendly relations with neighbors etc. hiring a house sitter ,and recording video cameras seem to be expensive and unnecessary expense until you realize the cost of replacing what they might be protecting

I found this post a guy posted, posted on a different website,
its a very good example of doing damn near everything badly and being un-prepared

Couldn't sleep last night, so I was up late last night/early this morning watching TV. Grandson staying with us in 1 room, wife in our bedroom. I'm watching TV. I hear a noise outside, I dismiss it as a raccoon or skunk. a few minutes later, I hear the noise again. I turn the TV down & listen. I can swear I hear voices whispering. Maybe- maybe not. I look out windows & see nothing. I go back to watching TV. There's landscape lighting on outside (way to late- I need to check timer) & all of a sudden- a shadow passes between the light & the window. Shit!!!!!. I need to investigate. Go to bedroom to get my H&K 9mm. Shit- it's in my range bag! Went to range the day before! Other weapons are locked up unloaded in gun safe. Get range bag & my 9mm is still cable locked! Get key, unlock cable & remove. Shit- all I have in my magazines are FMJ's. Open ammo box, fetch a box of Fiocchi HP's & load a few rounds in an empty magazine. Ok- I'm ready to protect my family from possible threat! Shit- where is the flashlight? It's 1:30am! I find the flashlight & go out to side yard checking area. I go outside on opposite side of house from where I heard them. I round the corner- flashlight goes out & won't come back on. Shit! I round the other corner & there they are! 2 people crouched below the window where I was sitting earlier. They have something in their hand but it's too dark to tell what it is. As soon as they see me, they flee over the wall.

All the classes I took, the training I went through, what a fail this was! Totally unprepared. Took far too long to find my handgun, unlock it, load it & then deal with a POS flashlight that decided to take a shit at a critical moment. Sweeping my yard w/ a loaded 9mm- I realize today- I couldn't see shit! That's pretty scary! All the training I took was in daylight, not at night. Oh- 3 dot white sights suck at night in darkness. That will change soon!

Called police, they showed up 25 minutes later (really?) & they find a screwdriver on ground at window. They had pried the screen off (breaking it) & were working on the double pane window. Gouge marks all over the vinyl frame. Had gloves on, no fingerprints. I got lectured about sweeping my yard w/ a weapon.

If I was asleep & they gained entry & were armed- this would have not went well.

your first logical first step , is to have though through what steps you can take too increase your homes security.
locking gates on fences and house and shop doors will obviously be a start, and having decent quality locks or chains etc. helps
as does having several motion sensor lights mounted

where they can provide both good lighting coverage and not be easily accessed from the ground without a ladder.
to reduce the possibility of prowlers disabling the lights.
an off sight monitored security system with multiple cameras that work in both day light and infrared at night certainly adds security.
having securely locking windows and doors and a burglar alarm with a battery back-up, cell phone wireless dialing capability , so the lines can,t easily be cut, and several very loud outside bells in the 120 decibel range adds further security!
if you feel comfortable with a fire arm a good 12 ga riot gun

that can be easily secured but accessed when needed won,t hurt to have handy and an exceptionally bright flash light will also prove to be handy, ID say 1000 lumen MINIMUM

the guy was putting himself at a huge tactical DIS-ADVANTAGE , by going outside
he should have seen what was going on with the security cameras and triggered the alarm system with a panic button key fob after turning out the lights inside and having the shot gun and flash light handy and calling the local cops once he was reasonably sure the security perimiter was being breached , while remaining inside and on a cell phone talking with police dispatch, your generally not supposed to defend yourself with force unless your attacked and physically at risk of harm not just property loss alone!
remember you have to logically and legally provide a reason for ALL your actions, and simple impending potential property damage or loss of valuables alone won,t provide a reason to use deadly force

btw a multi level approach to security is by far the best route to security

its a good idea to have at least two of these FOUR options
(battery disconnect switch)

plus a way to track your car should it be stolen
(fuel pump electrical cut off switch)
and of course making easy access to the car or truck far more difficult in a garage,
with its own locked access and alarms and exterior motion sensor lighting and ideally video surveillance, plus a fenced yard and a few dogs , is also smart.
(IGNITION cut off switch)

and hooking a horn up directly to the battery with a relay and switch so the horn goes on and stays on if the cars being started without the hidden security switch being first placed in the correct position, or the emergency brake released first, does not hurt either.
yes your sure to screw up and forget ,:D
but you'll quickly learn not to repeat that mistake:rolleyes:
