Re: TV CABLE ADJUSTMENT INFO

HEY GRUMPYVETTE
I, wish my engine had the cable run butterfly like in the picture below. Mines all enclosed and the butterfly inside the throttle body opening is the only thing that pivots. Nothing at all for me to mount it to.
DSC01970.jpg

I was thinking about possibly mounting it to the gas pedal but, that sets off all kinds of alarms in my brain... I don't want to watch a $2,300 TCI trans go up in flames[/color]

Grumpy i was looking on LS1tech.com and may have stumbled apon a couple ways to fix my problem. Just wanted to pass them on to you incase someone else asks my question at a later date. One guy there just created a bracket that is attached to his gas pedal that pulls the TV cable to its w.o.t position as the pedal bottoms out. He says its works fine. Another option is to attach a "dummy" throttle cable to the gas pedal and run it underhood to a spring loaded lever that would then pull the TV cable instead of the throttle body butterfly. I think i'm going to go with the second option myself. I think it will be easier to adjust it that way.
Thanks,
Stewart

YOU BEAT ME TO POSTING THAT INFO,or answer to the problem. I WAS DRINKING COFFEE, this morning and the wife ask me why I had this strange look and I said , Id just thought of the obvious answer to a guys problem, I was going to say why not mount a second throttle cable to a bracket where the cable control for the 700r4 trans could be also mounted, since the trans has no need to know exactly what the THROTTLE is doing but only the engine rpms load and speed of the car ,

guys I need some help. The guy that installed my new engine messed up the gears.I have P R N D D 2 and no1 gear.I was hoping you guys can tell me the proper way to set the adjustments on my 87.I have the shift knob and boot off.Is this where i make adjustments or under the car at the trans. The guy who did the work wants me to go to a trans. specialist after he screwed it up.

Thanks Jim

if its a 700r4 it has either 27 or 30 splines
in an 1986 its more likely but not sure to be 27 splines, in theory 1987 and newer are 30 spline

3rd and 4th (OD) use the same clutch pack. The clutch pack is applied in 3rd; transmission goes into OD when the 2nd/4th band applies (releasing the forward sprag).

If you're going to have an issue with the clutch pack, you'll see it in 3rd before you ever see it in 4th (OD) which is usually the case.

IIRC, the Corvettes came with is valve from the factory along with an improved 2-4 servo.

87vette81big POSTED THIS INFO

"You make shifter cable adjustments under the car at trans on your 87 Corvette.
Easiest using a car lift and driver's window rolled down.
You loosen the 15 milli meter hex nut on 700R4 trans shift lever.
Its a pinch clamp on outer end of shift lever @ trans.
Back off 1 turn.
Put shift lever into Park.
Push fully towards front of car. PARK uposition on trans.
Move shifter lever fully from Park to 1st gear.
Do this 2 times.
Put shift lever into Park.
Go back underneath.
Recheck to make sure trans is in Park still.
Tighten 15 mm hex nut. JUST SNUG & 1/8 TURN MORE.
18FT /LBS TORQUE SPEC.
Will be using the open end of 15 mm wrench.
Get the nut too tight it will snap off pinch bolt. Hard to find in short order.
Real easy to adjust shifter cable.
Take your time & recheck for correct operation.

According to the ATSG 200-4r manual:
No reverse or slips in reverse;
1) throttle valve cable
a) binding or misadjusted
2)manual linkage
a) misadjusted
3) throttle valve
a) binding
4) t.v. limit valve
a) binding
5) line bias valve
a) binding

1-2 shift--full throttle only
1) throttle valve cable
a) binding, unhooked or broken
b) misadjusted
2) throttle lever & bracket assembly
a) binding or unhooked
3) throttle valve & plunger
a) binding

rough 1-2 shift
1) throttle vlave cable
a) not adjusted properly
b) binding
2) throttle valve or t.v. plunger
a) binding
3) t.v. limit valve
a) binding
4) accumulator valve
a) binding

Going by your description and what the diagnostic chart says, I'd be looking at the tv cable again. On the 700r4 & 200-4r transmissions, throttle valve cable adjustment is paramount to the transmission survival. If it's adjustment is off, it can kill a transmission in a mile.

(I found this post, else..ware.... it has some good info)

TV Cable adjustment

You can find the proper procedure in a bunch of spots on the web - Jake's performance, Art Carr performance trans, Turbo Buick site, etc.. Do a search and see what you find.

You need a couple of items inorder to set this correctly, first and most importantly, the correct TV cable bracket on your throttle linkage. These are sepcific to you carb. There is one for a Holley, which I believe is the same for an Edlebrock, Rochester. This assuming your running a carb of course. You must have the correct bracket to maintain proper geometry for throttle vs tv cable movement. In case you're thinking of it, trying to make it yourself or using what you find that might be 'close' is a guarantee that you'll wreck a perfectly rebuilt or good used transmission. Next, is the tv cable, a factory cable makes this go easiest, but sometimes a factory cable is difficult to make work if your using the trans in a modified car, but it can be done. There are aftermarket cables, but the setup system will be different. Lastly, once you have the correct bracketry, linkage and factory cable, you have to make sure that your throttle cable is moving the carb to idle to full travel, if it doesn't, then you need to get that straightened out first. Now, to adjust, squeeze the metal adjuster at the carb end of the cable and pull toward the firewall on the cable sheath. It should clik as it slides back. Now release the adjuster and pull the throttle linkage to WOT with a reasonable amount of force and should see the tv cable sheath pull towards the throttle linkage. Now move the throttlelinkage several times rapidly full range watching the tv cable to make sure it stayed in the same place in the adjuster (this means the adjuster is working correctly). Then hold the throttle at WOT and pull on the actual cable minorly. The tv cable wire should have some additional travel when the throttle is at WOT. If it doesn't, then you have an issue. According to the factory system, the tv cable is now adjusted properly. But, I don't stop there.

To confirm that all is well now is the time to check line pressure to confirm that you've got it right. The line presuure port is on the driver side of the trans above and a little forward of the shift linkage. It is a 1/8" NPT plug. You'll need a fitting to thread into that, a hose with the proper connection and a 0-300psi gauge. I use a 0-500psi gauge. You have to get the gauge in the car with you, so that describes the length of hose needed. Once this is hooked up, which can be a pain if you are running true dual exhaust in a dinky(small) car, then start the car and IMMEDIATELY check for leaks at the fittings - ATF burns quickly and hot. At idle monitor your line pressure. Now unhook the tvcable from the throttle linkage only (doesn't require readjustment). The gauge should drop minorly - less than 5-10 psi and 2-4psi is OK for a stock tranny, but it should, repeat should, drop a little. Rehook the cable to the throttlelinkage. Put the trans in reverse and record the reading, should be 150+ psi. Put in 1st gear and record, should be 150+ psi. Check in 2nd, drive and overdrive - it shouldn't change in those three positions. If all is well, then now you're ready for a drive. When in OD, drive or 2nd the line pressure should jump from the idle reading prior to engine load being developed, which is a minor movement of the throttle pedal and it should jump to minimum of 125-130 at light cruising (low engine load), but more is good. If it passes this test, then apply throttle for a normal acceleration from say 15-20 mph to 35-45 mph and the pressure should jump well above 150 psi. So if that's OK, then get to cruising speed in OD on an open stretch of road and apply enough trhottle to get it to drop from OD to drive. As the throttle pedal is pushed the line pressure should jump and the pressure has to be over 150 psi prior to the shift occurring. If that is OK, then repeat the previous driving at highway speed and go WOT. The line pressure should max out and the car should shift into 2nd ('passing gear').

Two goals are what you're after : 1st - line pressure needs to up in all situations when under mpderate to heavy engine load, and 3nd - line pressure needs to be low at low engine load conditions. If the timing of the line pressure to engine load is incorrect, then transmission disaster will soon ensue. Notice the caps - DO NOT DRIVE IT FOR A DAY OR WEEK UNTIL THIS IS COMPLETED. The damage done in a 10 mile drive with the line pressure to low will show up quickly and is irreversable. One last thing to keep in mind, the shift points, the shift quality (smooth vs harsh) are not adjusted with the TV cable - DON't TRY TO ADJUST HOW IT SHIFTS WITH THE TV CABLE (notice the caps again.) These items are adjusted with servo, governer, valve body, boost valve adjustment.

A good, used stock tranmsission should max out at 170-190 psi of line pressure. Less than that and parts are worn out or leaking. If your trans is the original 85 or 85 SS Monte then it will have a better pump, higher pressure servo and a governor that allows for 5000ish rpm WOT shift point.

I have a CK Performance 200-4R that makes 270 psi at WOT and cruises at 110-115 psi. And it has full line pressure in 2nd gear also - yours might do this also it is from the Monte's I listed above. I also have a JY unit that I've used twice for a month or two at a time and it's pressures are what I listed in the 2nd paragraph. The JY unit works fine and shifts smooth/properly. But it feels super slushy compared to the CK unit that will rattle your teeth going from 1st to 2nd at WOT, and you can't blink between the 1st and 2nd shift. I also admit, that I've never launched hard with the JY unit so as to keep it as spare that works great for general cruising or a core for a performance build later.

Best of luck to you and DON'T DRIVE IT AGAIN UNTIL YOU GET THE TV CABLE SET PROPERLY - I'm not yelling, but rather speaking with stern caution
