yeah most of us do it! but try harder to avoid doing stupid things that you never expected to go badly

one Of the guys I know in Florida, gave me a phone call....
to tell me about a serious personal, screw-up he was involved in,
guys we all get in a hurry and do stupid stuff at times,

but think it through, simple stuff can get you killed!
it seems he had purchased a new 4x4 truck he needed to do his first oil change on.
he purchase the required car/truck ramps, oil and oil filter,
he even purchased a set of oil filter wrenches,

but he failed to purchase and use two heavy duty wheel chocks and use a bit of common sense,
setting the parking brake and use of two wheel chocks could reduce the chances of being seriously hurt,
use of a decent floor jack and 4 very strong jack stands, placed on a level concrete floor and the car/truck frame,

may take longer but its also safer placing wheel support stacks under the wheels for extra support also helps added added safety

as he felt the whole oil change would only take a few minutes, no issues, thinking...
Ill, just drive the truck up on the ramps and drain the oil, swap the filter and were done!

now I generally suggest you use a decent floor jack and jack stands,
but he simply placed the two ramps in front of the trucks tires in his drive way and rolled up on the ramps and even failed to set the parking brake, he simply placed the trans selector in PARK,
(well he thought he had, but he had placed it in neutral)

and failed to place the mandatory rear wheel chocks behind BOTH rear wheels before he slid under the truck with an oil drain pan
well the result was that after he placed the drain pan and started yanking on the drain plug and the truck started to roll off the ramps,

he scrambled to get out from under the truck ,
but was only partly successful, in getting out from under the truck,
he got a crushed ankle as the truck rolled over his foot,
(yes his drive way was at a very mild slope angle, but he though he was safe)

something he could very easily have avoided if he had taken a bit more effort in the set-up and proceeded with the safety factors
he strongly suggested I not post his name as he feels both lucky to be alive and does not want to be reminded of how dumb he was!
he stated he remembered a post several years back I had made about using 4 jack stands and making wheel supports out of stacks of 2x4 boards

(remember to measure accurately your jack stands and floor jack only allow you to raise the car to a certain height, if you make the wheel supports too high you won't be able to get them under the wheels or car frame)

as my dad was fond of saying... if your going to be DUMB!
you better be TOUGH:facepalm::giggle:
