One Reason why I still like Pontiac Cast Iron Heads Grumpy.
They still can work.
Like the Peanut port BBC Chevy Heads.
They can work just Great still.
1970 Ram Air 4's 614's on the TA still considered best ever balanced Exhaust to Intake Ratio factory heads from Pontiac.
I know someone that has a set of RAM Air 5's. Need $$$$$.

Its either no side work. All at once. Guys are broke can't pay.
Something comes up on the home front. Race project set aside again.
Been collecting Race parts when I can & have the $.
Driving a Vintage car like a Pontiac Tin Indian GP or Datsun 280Z turns heads.
Unlike a Corvette many times.
People want to stop & talk. Maybe lead to side jobs that pay $$$$.

i think im gonna get a night job working security at a hospital, ~18 bucks an hour to scratch my ass and lose sleep... between that and the VA money i get from going to school i can finally scratch two nickels together and make something. then i can start charging real money for the side jobs i do. im so sick of busting my ass and unraveling other shitty mechanics jerry rigs and cutting my rates just to get work... my buddy is in the same boat he told me he took on a chevelle recently for a customer which had about 2000 dollars worth of labor that hes doing for 1000 because he needs the money. its fucking up the market down here because everyone wants something for nothing. from now on im doing $60 a labor unit and if people dont want to pay i dont want to waste my time. i got projects of my own.
its amazing how so many people think that mechanics should be charging like 10 bucks an hour or something. people dont argue with the doctor over how much he charges... shouldnt argue with me either.

yea thats been my mistake for too long, not having a respectable car out at the hangouts and at the races... the c4 is nice but its not a display of what im capable of. once the 280 runs and drives im going to start on the body work and hopefully reel some people in with my attention to detail.

thats the thing bud, you hit the nail on the head. all these wannabe's opening up shops left and right, no certifications, no skills to speak of, no expenses, often illegal operations messing up the industry.
how can i compete with a guy who is using a 100 dollar harbor freight tool kit and jack stands working and living out of his van? i have more overhead than he does, more expenses, i have equiment and materials and recycling and hazmat to consider and this guys got 2000 bucks invested in his whole mobile mechanic shop... shit i got two grand worth of tools on my pegboard, nevermind the tool chest. meanwhile those are the same guys dumping antifreeze and oil in the ground fucking up the world LITERALLY FUCKING UP THE WORLD and i got collection containers for all that shit. trying to do the right thing takes serious will power man.

if its a 40 hour week, AT $18 an hour seems like decent pay rate for what will mostly be opening doors and walking around checking doors locked etc. from what Ive heard from some security guards Ive talked with, Id certainly be jumping on that opportunity if nothing better was available.
In fact if I could find a similar job at a similar pay rate I could do Id jump on it to help make my expenses, that the current situation seems to be draining me financially with no end in site (supporting my son and his family).
Un- fortunately being over 65 years old,and having back injuries that make walking and standing more difficult ,and at times very painful, makes that something thats not going to happen.
As to some guys wanting damn near everything for next to nothing , that sounds a lot like many people I know (especially extended family members, and some neighbors ) who never seem to be available when I need help but always seem to find time to visit when THEIR CAR has issues and usually not only expect you to work for free, they also seldom foll;ow instructions when you tell them you need name brand parts X, Y, Z, which you look up the part numbers for and give to them, to fix the problem and they show up with a low price semi clone of part A.and B, and ask if you can fix it with that because the parts you listed cost another $49 more .

yea grumpy its three nights one week, four nights the next week, 12 hour shifts from 7pm to 7am with an hour lunch break that 33 hours and 44 hours respectively which works out to 77 hours biweekly (four of them being time and a half overtime in the 44 hour week) so its right around 1400 bucks biweekly before taxes. not a bad gig and because its only a couple nights a week i still have free time to do real work.

I did that Mann bike I posted some pics of a while back same problem $500 for 100+ hours of art work on it. I originally told him what I wanted he didn't like the price said he was taken back by it. Was ready to distroy the art and paint it black and send him on his way but couldn't do it to a friend of the family or to my artwork. But I see it allot in the custom paint business they want my quality work for Joey Smoey's just got a airbrush kits price who does a skull stencil and some flames that look like my 2 year old son drew.

yea man flat rate is crap. most "high performance" shops around here are stealing from the mechanics, everyone gets paid a weekly salary in cash regardless of how much work they do, and they usually get worked to the bone for peanuts.
