114132 Cam with 152123 Heads?

Hi everyone, first post!

I have an 85 Vette with 80k. I'd like to do some budget upgrades over the next year. I don't have the money for a stroker or an LS swap, but am considering some DIY porting and a cam swap, along with long tubes. After reading some good reviews by Grumpy on other forums about the 114132 cam, I am leaning towards it. Of course, I also have stock 624 heads. I saw the Summit 152123 heads recommended a couple of times as a good but cheap replacement for the smog 624s.

Do you think these heads would be a good combination with the 114132 cam and 1.6 RRs for a budget project? Anything better out there for the same money? Or just keep the smog heads?

Thanks!

Trickflow heads.
Air Wolf Heads.

Limit is the stock TPI.
Converting to a 4-bbl carb is a lot less $ than EFI Upgrades.
1985 is a Nightmare to EFI TUNE.
HARDLY SUPPORTED TODAY.

knowing what your goals are for the car and engine combo, and what your expecting from the parts upgrade would go a long way towards deciding if those parts are correct for the application, the combo of the listed heads and cam , and rockers ,upgrade should easily give you 40-50 more flywheel,hp, (maybe more) add the long tube headers and 15-20 more hp is a good guess and it should broaden the power curve, but are you planing on changing any drive train components like rear gears? adding a low restriction exhaust and what transmission are you using?
yeah, the stock 1985 TPI intakes very restrictive and yeah port clean-up and minor plenum and runner porting helps, but keep in mind ALL those changes while sure to make the car more responsive and giving you a bit more power youll feel in the BUTT DYNO, are also going to limit you if your real goals in power is significantly higher so think it thru, will you be happy with 60-70 more hp, or a 25%-30% boost in flywheel power as a realistic goal, keep in mind the original injectors will max out rather quickly. and the stock intake will still limit you to under 5500rpm. the stock engine produced only 230 HP

IF THE CARS A 700R4 THE STOCK REAR GEAR IS MOST LIKELY A 2.87:1 HARDLY IDEAL FOR PERFORMANCE
yes the combo will do what its intended to do, but if you have further increased power goals in the future much of those parts will need to be replaced, and new rear gears added etc, so think thru the goal carefully

Thanks for the replies! Yes, I think I would be happy with 60 to 70 more hp for that price...especially considering the $5k+ to exceed the 400 mark most guys said they spent.

I lucked in with a car with the performance gear (307) even though it's the A4. I am assuming it's had transmission work in the past. Shifts hard and when I stomp it from a roll the RPMs shoot to 2400, making me wonder if the PO upped the stall. I run 315s in the rear now, so with stock power I don't have traction problems (I sure did with the previous worn out 255s). Car also has catback and the typical free mods.

Is there a better but equally affordable combo? It's just hard to beat a set of heads for less than $700. I was initially just going to stick with my stock heads, but came across those and thought they might be better.

I will read those links you shared in your post Grumpy. This site is like a college for hotrodding small blocks. :) Thanks again!

The 1984, 1985, & 1986 C4 Corvettes all had factory 2,000 Rpm stall converters with the 700R4.
Known to flash higher on ocassion.
I can flash my converter to 2800-3000 stomping on the gas hard from a stop in my 87 C4 Vert.
Custom built stall converter.

I run 315's also on Factory 1990 ZR-1 11X17 Rims.
2.73 gears out back.

Well ..... let me be the first person to say WELCOME to the forum!!! The rest
of the bums here forgot their manners.
What part of the world do you live?

What is your budget for this project, that might help with the advice you get???

2.87 Gears was for the 1980-1982 C3 Corvette only. They used the 1st Gen Aluminium Dana 44 IRS.
C4 Corvette used 2.59, 2.73, 3.07, 3.45, & 3.54 gears .
2 rears used. Dana 36 & Super Dana 44 IRS.
All auto cars had the Dana 36.
Manual trans had the Super Dana 44.
1987-88 Callaway Twin Turbo Corvettes with Auto Trans were equipped with the Super Dana 44.
Also Turbo 400 trans with Gear Vendors Overdrive. Really Rare car new & even more so today.

So I didn't notice the "Introduce Yourself" section until just now...

I'm from Huntsville Alabama and have owned my car for three years. As far as budget, after seeing what a lot of folks spend on an LS swap or stroker, I resigned myself to just a cam, 1.6 RRs, and long tubes with some porting work on the intake as a DIY project to wake the car up and make it a bit more fun, but with no intentions of setting any speed records. Then I saw a post about the above mentioned head from Summit as a replacement for my smogger 624 heads and decided to post here, rather than on one of the Vette forums. There doesn't seem to be too much of a difference between the two heads though, after reviewing the specs. Not enough for a few hundred bucks, anyway.

An alternative is to purchase aftermarket heads used.
Racing Junk . com.
Ebay Fleabay.
From a local dirt track racer.
Drag Racer.

LS Has been geared mainly for the C5, & C6 Corvettes.
Your limit is always available Big Tube Race headers that don't cost $2,000- 5,000 for a Corvette.
And the IRS REAR.
To upgrade to a Solid axle 4-link will cost at least $5,000 typical.
Or a Bullet proof aftermarket Ford 9" inch IRS Or Dana 60 IRS will cost over $10,000.00 .

Messing with SBC Is no longer worthwhile.
The New Benchmark is 10.5 ET HELLCAT PERFORMANCE .
& 870 + HP.

Will take a. BBC RACE OR BIG BLOCK PONTIAC 455.
OR FORD ENGINE POWER.

No, lol, more like 5'9 and 143 pounds. It's actually a nickname held over from school that I only use on car forums.
