Found this transmission on Craigslist. Drove to Chicago today & brought it home.
All original minus Torque converter.
Heavy Duty Performance TH 400 from a 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix with optional 428ci High Output 390 Horsepower V8.
Code "PR". Stamped on the Yellow Trans ID Tag. Stenciled part worn off. But PR Stamping remains along with 69 for 1969 model year.
Pontiac Turbohydromatics had a Yellow Tag always.
Just $75.00. :mrgreen:
Has super heavy duty 5-6 Friction Count Forward clutch drum & intermediate drum setup.
Hard to find today.
I am going to rebuild it myself & use in the 1963 GP. Turbo 400 in their now from a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix w/ 400 Poncho engine.

Primary difference are found in the governor, TV spring,
Pressure regulator, and downshift timing valve.

2- Not interchangeable.
Primary difference are found in the number of plates in
the clutch pack, valve body, and modulator.

3- Prefix and serial # located on plate on lower left corner
of case rear face.

4- Prefix, year, and serial # located on plate on left side

5- Prefix, year and serial # located on; 1964-65 Metal tag,
1965-67 Stamp on servo cover

6- Late production 1973 Pontiac trans have a # 2 between
codes letters

7-Production day, shift built, transmission model and
model year are stamped on the 1-2 accumulator cover
in the middle right side of case

My Reference chart didn't copy & paste well.
Will provide a Sticky Link later like Grumpy does.
The PR 1969 TH400 Code towards the bottom of chart.
Researching last night the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix with optional 390 Horsepower engine is very rare.
Just around 200 or so made with Muncie 4-speed & TH 400 PR code trans.
Vehicle VIN # Stamped on Driver's side of Case above Pan Rail.
Kool Find.
Gear Vendors Overdrive or Laycock my next item to Aquire.

I found a few more interesting reads this morning on Turbo 400's.
Post this evening links.
Ferrari used the TH400 behind V12 engines.
They couldn't build a bullet proof automatic trans.

Many European cars used GM transmissions, the XJ-S Jags also had T-400's, the smaller BMW's used 4L60E's well past 2000, etc...

The Germans had to been mad when the Sun Gear shell broke in all the BMW's with 700R4 & 4L60E auto transmissions.
They are decent when rebuit right.
But I still haven't seen a Tougher auto Trans for Drag Racing than A built Turbo 400.

A past younger Friend had a BMW M3 in 2007-2008.
Him & me used to race around wih me driving my 87 Corvette Roadster.
That little M3 Ran pretty good & handled nice around curves marked at 35-45 mph.
We ran through them at 90-110 mph.
On the ragged edge he had me, M3 was lighter.
But on the open highway interstate 80, no contest.
Leave the Vette 700R4 in overdrive. Line up side by side at 70 mph.
Romp on them both.
At 114 mph the Special Corvette 3-4 upshift valve made its WOT 4th shift & held in 4th gear.
At 145-150 I left him a 1/2 mile behind with the Top down.
A while down stopped & laughed at him. I got the Middle Finger back.
Laughed just more.
V8 torque.
700R4 Wide ratio gearspread works nice with the 2.73 posi rear.
