I have been restoring/ hot rodding for about 50 yrs (yes I am an old geezer) but had never built an automatic trans, so I thought I would give it a try.
I am maybe confused checking rear section end play, I am using a yoke and a tool I made to push the output shaft in. I am putting a dial indicator on the upper end of the output shaft.
I have both the old and newer ATSG manuals that I am trying to follow (shown below).
When checking rear section end play should I press upward on the output shaft with enough force to compress the lo & reverse clutch housing assemble wave spring (reverse clutch release) ?
It originally had a .136 selective steel washer and it measured ~.035 end play and I bought .157 but it still has about .028 end play. This makes no sense since I added .021 on the selective steel washer selection. Maybe I wasn't pressing up so hard the first time.
I have another 2004R disassembled and checked it not in the case. If I push down hard on the sun gear I get .024 using a feeler gage between the snap ring and the selective steel washer.
I am along way from the desired .004-.010.
Or to ask the question another way, what are the sources of end play in the parts included in this measure ?
I bought a hardened sun shell for the transmission I am building and measuring
Your advice would be appreciated.
