a fairly decent quality hand held 1/2" chuck drill

a couple days back, one of my favorite hand held 1/2" drill's just stopped working, after a friend dropped it off a ladder he was working on, now it did not appear to be physically damaged externally but it was no longer functional. now to be fair it was 20 plus year old.
it was a DEWALT, that I have had in for repairs a couple times , the electrical switch that acts as a trigger seems too have had failed for the third time that I remember, the last time they charged me $50 to repair it at the local DEWALT repair shop, something I really can,t afford right now. .
While I use a Mill or drill press if at all possible as precise control of the drill placement is far easier obviously where the hole to be drilled is located prevents the larger tools use in many cases
my friend that dropped it, gave me $50 for the potential repair charges, even though I did not expect it because of my free and rather extensive assistance, at his home installing his alarm system, ,but because that drill had failed several times prior and because it was 20 plus years old , I decided to look over my options rather than just throwing cash into a repair ,so I just went out to HOME DEPOT and looking over my options and prices the RIDGID drill looked like the best value
AS IT CAME WITH A LIFETIME GUARANTEE
now I have a spare.
a bosch hammer drill will remain as the back-up.
yeah, maybe I'm a tool junky but I value good tools, and I don,t think many guys who are into working on cars won,t own a decent hand held drill.
and the 3/8" type check type that many guys own is effectively worthless compared to a 1/2" check hammer drill when you go doing jobs like mounting shelving to concrete floors and walls where the larger and more powerful hammer drill versions have a very noticeable advantage, I noticed the difference very well demonstrated when I helped a buddy install a security system with a dozen cameras at his home and shop, a standard 3/8" check drill took 4-5 times as long to drill the required mounting holes as the 1/2" hammer drill took to with far less effort.

yeah the rods simply a rather non-precise way to limit drill bit depth penetrating a wall or similar surface

About 6 months ago some lowlife bastard stole my tools from my work truck while on the job so I had to go out & buy 2 new 18 volt cordless drills & a 1/2 electric hammer drill what pisses me off even more than the missing drills are the bits they stole I'm still finding missing stuff

yeah! I had something rather similar happen at work, they busted out the side window in my van and took all my company and personal tools, I was out about $1200 personally, the total time the bastards took had to be under 5 minutes
