as always doing a good bit of research before spending your cash helps a great deal, in getting the correct intake to match your application, and yes the wrong choice will have a big effect on your results.
if your using a cam with less than 240 duration at .050 lift and less than 468 cubic inches a dual plane intake will frequently be the better choice in over all average torque, especially with larger rectangular port heads.
once you build a combo with 489 or more cubic inch displacement and select a cam with 245 degrees of duration at .050 lift you generally find the single plan intakes produce supervisor results, especially with the smaller oval port heads.
obviously as displacement increases or the port size decreases, the port air flow speeds tend to increase so on the larger displacements, the intake design used tends to become restrictive at lower rpms.you can calculate the ideal intake runner cross section and length.
