any way to bypass the oil pressure switch on an 84

Grumpy,
we spoke the other night for about an hr on the phone with my 84 oil pressure switch. i have installed a mach oil gauge using the port located by the oil filter. 40lbs of pressure on initial start up and tapers down to 26-27lbs after being warmed up, and will increase to 60-62lbs. now will i get the same pressure reading at the switch, as i do at bottom reading? havent been able to check it at the switch due to time involved getting to it. could it be possible that the top end be plugged up with trash causing no oil to reach the switch? thus leading to the oil light going off at higher rpms and the fuel system cutting out? is there any way to bypass the switch and just use the gauge i have installed?

Pressure should be same at top port where factory gauge switch is installed.
The fuel pump pressure switch cuts out at 4 psi, if you have that pressure at high revs I think you would have other problems.Only way to check is to install gauge off top hole to confirm actual pressure

the oil pressure switch might be defective, if the fuel pump won,t run, even if its new
and at $11-$35 Id just swap it out if your concerned

theres a good deal of good and useful advise, in this thread but Id point out the
sensor(s) next to the distributor, base ,could be a cause of a problem, because occasionally one of these starts acting up intermittently causing the fuel pump or ECM to stop working,or the VATS system, or the FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM.

if you hear the fuel pump pressurize the fuel rails but the engine only starts than stalls, or fails to start, its frequently the fault of a defective oil pressure sensor

low oil pressure or a defective oil pressure sensor will cut off your ignition
Oilpressureswitchearly.jpg

both these sensors, located near the base of the distributor on the block, are known to fail & leak, oil at times, especially the smaller one with two blade connectors

the single terminal sensor runs the oil gauge the dual connector runs the fuel pump ONCE theres about 5 psi of oil pressure but they do fail and they do leak oil when they fail and both are commonly located near the distributor

but if youve got decent oil pressure (as far as that switch is concerned)(AND YOU SEEM TO FROM WHAT YOU POSTED) I think your problem is else-ware in the fuel or ignition system
