Its basically a turbo hydro auto trans with a bell housing and flywheel and clutch replacing the torque converter assembly
giving you automatic shifting and the ability to launch a car and disconnect or slip a clutch, like a manual transmission.
they are not common simply because torque converter technology has advanced over the last 30 years to the point they have few advantages making it worth the effort to build and install one.
The Clutch Turbo 400 is a transmission that uses a clutch. This transmission was used in the late 60s and early 70s in funny cars, pro stock etc. The Clutch Turbo is still used today. Extreme Automatics is the only shop we know of that still builds the Clutch Turbo. Some say this is old technology.
