"GRUMPY?, I read a great many posts on several sites about building a kick butt 383 and I,ve noticed most of the guys on forums seem to suggest AFR heads ..ARE AIR FLOW HEADS THE BEST CHOICE?, I want to build a good solid 450 hp 383 for my COBRA KIT CAR, but I,m not rolling in cash and $1500-$2000 for heads seems a bit excessive, Id also like to know what cam and compression ratio you would suggest, Id spend that if its required but I,d like some feed back here!"

I've found BRODIX I.K. heads are very good quality, and decent value per dollar,
for a high performance street/strip style engine

the heads you select should be based on several factors like displacement, compression ratio, cam timing used and intended power range, ETC.
the AFR are some of the best but certainly not the only valid choice, you might also want to think about the cam, lift and duration, and the rpm range, youll want the car to perform in.
what transmission,(if its an automatic, whats the converter stall speed) what rear gear ratio and what car weight are you using
generally a good hydraulic roller cam in the 235-245 duration and .550-.600 lift on a 110-106 lsa in a 10:1-10.5:1 compression ratio 383 , with heads that flow at least 260cfm at .600 lift, makes a good combo
making 450 hp from a chevy 383 is certainly not easy to do with stock parts but its reasonably easy to do with a few well selected and matched components , the key is doing the required research and picking a well proven combo from a trusted source to duplicate.
If I was building a 383 the first thing Id be looking at was my budget and what car it was meant to be powering, its weight, drive train ( transmission) and rear gear ratio, tire diam.. Id suggest doing a good deal of research and reading before you start its ALWAYS going to help in the long haul, as youll spend less and know more!
heres some useful linked info...yeah I know theres a HUGE tendency to skip links..AND SUB LINKS .....DON,T ...your success partly depends on knowing what your options are!
