As I age I find can abide dealing with or listening too, incompetent jerks even less, maybe its because I can much more easily recognize it when some borderline moron behind a parts counter, at the local auto parts store is trying to BULL SHIT a customer, but I used to just "go with the flow"to get by.... but lately I just can,t tolerate jerks!
I got a call from a good friends "FRANK" today who was having a minor issue with his cars fuel line leaking, he pulled to the side of the road when he smelled fuel leaking and popped his hood to find a cheap fuel filter he had installed months before ,was leaking fuel on his intake manifold, and not wanting to try driving the car and because he did not have the correct parts or tools he called me, knowing I was located fairly close by,his current location,he called to see if I could help!.
so I asked a few questions , concerning what was happening , the symptoms , the car he was driving and why he was temporarily stuck, then I headed out to the closest auto parts store (in this case ADVANCE AUTO) to buy some clamps replacement fuel line and a fuel filter.
I walked in and there was two counter guys (both looked to be in early 20s) and there was an old very over weight lady looking to be in her 70s asking about brake pads and a younger middle age guy who looked to be 40 ish, asking about an alternator, at the counter.
it was about 10 A.M. , by 10:05 A.M. I had located the filter and clamps, all I needed was the counter guy to cut me 3 ft of 3/8" fuel line, I stood behind these customers from 10:05 A.M. until 10:22 A.M. listening to the counter guys and customers discussion,s ,which in both cases resolved around the counter guys insisting that the correct parts would not be able to be located, in either case until the cars owners could tell the counter guy , the answers to a dozen fill in the blank questions about the cars , on the stores computer screens, and it was obvious that without that computer these guys were totally clueless and naturally both these clowns who owned the cars, didn,t know a damn thing about the cars, they were buying parts for,.. at that point I asked out loud if either car was currently parked out side........both were! I suggested the owners of the cars or the parts counter , guys might want too, actually go out to the parking lot (30 feet away) and look at the car and verify the required info.....this SHOCKING CONCEPT was obviously far beyond the mental ability too grasp of any of the four morons and after an additional 5 minutes of fruitless and meaningless discussion between, clueless morons I just put the parts on the counter and walked out!
nearly 30 minutes totally wasted standing in line because the four of the dumbest people in the area had arrived at advance auto parts just before I showed up.....I went to the next store down the block, (CONGRESS AUTO PARTS) I walked in and out with the required parts in less than 5 minutes , and proceeded over to fix franks car.

honestly do these parts look like it would take that much effort to locate?
apparently it takes some stores FAR less time than others...just to ask what you need let alone supply them

yes I realize its partly my fault because I voluntarily subjected myself to TALKING TOO,ADVANCE AUTO COUNTER PERSONNEL

Its just as bad here at times Grumpy.
Dummies everywhere.
Learned its the broken educational system & political leaders to blame.

I'll always remember when I walked in a parts shop asking for a standard oil filter… they couldn't help me. Not even with a FRAM part number. All I wanted was a standard chevy V8 filter. Not rocket science here.

Sooo, the guy could only help me if I gave a him a vehicle make, model, year… to type into his computer.

Randomly I tell the guy: 1968 corvette 427!

- You have that???
- No, I'm building it… I'm starting with the filter.

He types it in, goes to the back of the shop and bring me an open element paper filter.

- That's not it!
- Sure it is… oil filter for a 1968 corvette 427! You just pop it in the canister.
- No you don't… that's a fuel filter cartridge.

Ensues a "discussion" on the nature of the part.

He asks for another vehicle.

- Grmbl. 1981 Malibu

Type - type - type...

- Hey, it's the same part num… ummm, wait a minute… I forgot a number

Dork!!!!

Then there was the other time when a guy wanted $125 for a 200-4R oil filter! No F- Way!!!!

ROLF :).
we have 3 parts store locally

i go at carquest, there is always the same 3 guy behind the counter + the boss, all local people. one is into painting the 2 other are into parts. They have a good team.
When they are unsure they let me behind the computer :).
I always get a price deal there, i love it because they usually have what i need in stock and if not, its there next morning.
sometime i call them so they bring the part on the counter, ready for when i get there.

autopartsplus, usually 2 or 3 guy in there, really into painting, always making a price deal. But, low stock quantity, and if its not in stock, it take a while.

Napa on the other side, usually its some 18yo kid and well, i go there to get nuts and bolt/o-ring and fittings and sometime some stdp relays.
While they are really trying to give good support and fast service, they use book to find parts and they lack some knowledges(searching for parts they have no clue what it is), its very slow except for simple things.
And my sister is working as mechanic, and one day she called for something, and the counter guy got mixed up with another client.. he started telling her she was fucked up and that drug she is taking is making her fucked(she do not take drug..) and.. really disgusting stuff, not the kind of stuff you want a counter guy to scream at you over the phone... after he noticed he made an error he just said a simple sorry like it did not matter...

There is also canadiantire, well, i like them for stuff like bondo, fiberglass, polishing compound, electric wire(made in canada so), and some other stuff, but if its not in stock, it can take month before you get it. And last time i got a warranty return one of them tryed to screw me saying warranty was over while it was clearly not.

Wow - what a jackhole. His boss know about this?????

Wel, she did not make a deal of it, just buy her parts elsewhere, except for the job.

Wow...Math...After reading I am surprised you didn't pull down the 18 year olds pants & spank him with a Tire Iron.

Your expectations are set too high Grumpy. These workers know they're in a dead-end job and would rather you get pissed and go somewhere else so they can spend their time uninterrupted texting their girlfriends and finding new and creative methods of ripping off the company.
