Bad skip

My 87 Vette let me down yesterday. Had to get a tow home. Made a stop at the auto parts store after work yesterday and when I got back in the car to leave, it was hard to start and when it did start, it was skipping and backing firing. Before this, it was running prefect. So it sat for 2 minutes while I was in the parts store and bam, no go.. I haven't started troubleshooting things yet but I going to start with the ignition, rotor, coil and HEI module. No check engine light and the fuel pump primes but I will check fuel pressure too. Other areas to check?

as always a logical step bye step approach, is best, its as usually ,sensor failure, electrical (like fuses or a burnt wire,, mechanical, like a loose hose or bent push rod, or fuel delivery, volume or pressure or fuel quality, like water in the fuel, related, Id start by checking the fuel pressure and looking for loose vacuum hoses and electrical connections then try pulling trouble codes and check the timing, and simple stuff like checking the TPS AND IAC , and injector fuses you also may want to open the shrader valve by removing the inside screw in valve like a tire air valve and placing a clear plastic tube on it that's long enough to drain at least a quart into a clear glass container to see if theres crap like rust or water in the fuel.
you'll obviously need to verify all the plug wires are connected and in good condition over their entire length and post clear pictures of your labeled spark plugs as they tell a good deal about the engines health.

I had a friend stop at a 7/11 once, who called me ,to tell me he needed a tow home, and that his perfectly running 1970 chevelle started running like crap and then would not start , it turned out some jealous low I.Q. scum had poured a 16 oz coke in his gas tank while he was in the store

Broken hands, fingers, arms, & kneecaps, black eyes, & jaws wired shut will stop those shenanigans real fast .

Well, so far it appears to be a bad 'brand new' fuel pump.. Crap
verify the electrical currents getting to the pump , relays and fuses are good, and the fuel filters not clogged with crap, before thinking a new pump failed, YES the fuel pump may have failed ,but Ive seen more fuel pump relays, fuses and oil pressure sensors cause fuel delivery issues than fuel pumps that were recently replaced cause problems

the fuel filters located under the front pass side door area near the frame and the shop manual will go into some detail on its removal, yes your going to loose some fuel so its best to do this up on a lift or jack stands where access is easier and where you can see what your doing.
theres an arrow on the filter indicating direction of fuel flow for a reason , pay attention and do it correctly, have some shop towels and a fire extinguisher handy ANYTIME you work on fuel lines!

Sure enough, the fuel pump was shot. Very strange how it could be running fine the shut the car off and die. It seemed to be open across it's terminals. New pump in and all is good now. All the filters are new and I have solid fuel pressure...

We are going to have to start calling you Grumpy Junior with your
trouble shooting skills this good !!! :D

Question, what the typical current draw of a stock C4 electric fuel pump? It's a 10amp fused so I figure 5-6 amps maybe? I want to check and make sure I don't have something going on causing strain on my fuel pump. Loosing a new one two weeks after installed worries me. Could have been just a dud but I want to make sure nothing screwy is going on.

its supposed to be a 15 amp circuit

I'll check it out when I get home but the service manual shows 10A..

Checked the current draw while the pump was running and it came in a 6 Amps. I'm not sure if thats normal but I suspect it is. At least I have a baseline.

Sent the support folks at Airtex a note asking about typical current draw on a E3210. The max is 8.5 amps.

"Good afternoon. I show that the fuel pump for your 1987 Chev Corvette would be an E3210. The amp draw spec on it is 8.5 max amps at system pressure. If you are seeing 6 amps I would believe that to be normal."

You say the pump is new, did you ask them about replacing the pump while you
had their ear about current draw???

I just complained about wire crimper from S&G ToolAid company and they are
shipping me another one and only asking me to return the old one with a copy
of the email placed in the box.

The pump that failed after 2 weeks was a Delco. I returned it and got my money back.
