OK, your engine smokes or it just started making knocking noise ETC. and its time for an over haul, it may require just a clean-up and new rings and bearings a new cam and lifters etc, it may require a good deal more, and you won,t know till its disassembled and carefully inspected, if your new at the process take the time to do some research
start by reading thru this thread and its linked info

first, when you buy parts, only deal with well known national suppliers, your local machine shop,
SUMMIT RACING,
JEGS,
DOUG HERBERT,
ETC.
I would not even think of buying used stuff off ebay, too many people use EBAY to dump defective parts, and regain some of there money.
before you start thinking of building an engine make a detailed list of the machine work costs and parts listing, the parts required and cost.
that engine block may or may not be salvageable, it depends on what was worn or broken, but it will cost several hundred dollars to have it cleaned, bored, and have it sonic tested, freeze plugs and cam bearings installed and decked and line honed, by the time youve correctly installed a new rotating assembly youll be lucky to have less than $1200-$1400 in the short block, the heads being rebuilt can easily cost $500 or more in machine work, so if your looking at more than just a rings & bearings and new cam and lifters , being needed, youll more than likely be well ahead buying a NEW G.M. 350 4 bolt block CRATE ENGINE, with a warranty

I build engines as a hobby, and used to do it as a business and if your looking for a basic 350 sbc with under 330hp,your going to find a G.M. crate engine with a warranty the best value
you can very easily spend a good deal more on a rebuild and have a less durable engine that costs more and runs worse
In many cases guys just want to get back on the road with a dependable engine, your going to find most rebuilds need a good deal more parts to be in complete running order , that boosts costs significantly

NOW if your looking at spending at least $4-6k youve got plenty of options and yes you can build a respectable performance engine, but think it thru, list all the parts and cost of machine work, before you start and EXPECT costs to increase 20_40% from that point, you don,t want to be 3/4 of the way into a rebuild only to find your budget maxed out or that your goals have changed
