Grumpy... I just purchased a non-running 1985 corvette,
for less than $2K , as a project, the outside looks decent from a distance, but it needs a paint job and minor body work,
the dash does not light up, the engine will start ,
but it runs like crap, and its an auto transmission that does not seem to work correctly,
the head lights and tail lights work, as do the blinkers but the turn signals are intermittent,
the interior needs to be redone, the clear panels in the roof are cracked... So the corvette needs some TLC ... suggestions????

I get very similar projects and questions on a constant recurring basis,
so lets just jump into a few random areas and you direct the web sites readers to areas of concern,
theres several very knowledgeable people here on the web site that can help with most if not all areas.
well from the description, it sounds like you got a decent average condition,

34 year old corvette that was not well cared for, or well maintained.
so you should start by making a logical list of whats not working correctly,
list what needs too be replaced or repaired and break the project down into basic areas,
like, seats, rugs, dash, gauges, drive train, etc
doing a tune-up , a compression test, and pulling trouble codes is a good place to start.
don,t get over whelmed theres not a single part that can,t easily be , diagnosed and if required, repaired or replaced

what are the trouble codes?
you could and should check for a loose, or cracked flex-plate,
check all the fluids like trans fluid, brake fluid, coolant, engine oil,
check the brakes, check the electrical grounds battery voltage alternator,
and starter, u-joints wheel bearings, a loose bell-housing,
and pull the valve cover and check for a valve train clearance or wear issue

a logical step by step approach will lead you to the problem,
youll be amazed at what youll learn reading links.
use of a shop manual and multi meter can be very helpful

BTW it generally helps if you post the city and state your in,
as theres at least some chance a local member,
may want to stop by and help you diagnose,
and maybe help rectify the issue if your LOCAL

buy a CHEVY SHOP MANUAL FOR YOUR YEAR CORVETTE!
RULE#1
never assume a damn thing ISOLATE ,TEST AND VERIFY

step #2 , get a shop manual, timing light, multi meter and vacuum and fuel pressure gauge because you darn sure want to verify the sensor functions

as usual, got to ask?
what are the project goals?
whats your budget?
Do you have the tools, and work area and experience ,
too jump head first into a major rebuild and/or performance upgrade?
are you comfortable doing major engine rebuilds ?,
and can you do ,carpet, interior, body work, paint, dash gauge replacement, sensor and EFI, trouble shooting and electrical work?
having done a few dozen c4 corvette re-builds
over the past decades I can point out a few tips

related threads, to get started... ask detailed questions as required.

If the Engine runs poor the 700R4 will not shift correct Grumpy.
1985 Corvettes had a Factory GM recall for defective HEI distributor caps.
