Car stuttered and now fuel gauge reads empty
I have a 1996 coupe with the LT4 motor and 59k.
I was driving the car cruising along and the car jerked a couple of times and all the sudden the Fuel gauge is now reading Empty and the check gauges light is on.
Anyone experienced this, its got me worried because the gauge read 1/2 a tank just seconds before the engine stalled. Any help is appreciated.

as I,m sure someone by now has mentioned, step one is you need to assume that the gauge or sending unit, or fuel pump is defective until proven other wise so swallow your pride and buy 5 gallons of fresh fuel, and Id suggest adding 8 oz of marvel mystery oil and a can of injector cleaner into the tank, at that point you, will know for sure that your not dealing with an empty fuel tank. that will eliminate the possibility your dealing with an obvious defective fuel gauge and empty fuel tank., grab your factory shop manual, multi meter and pull the trouble codes and don,t assume anything ,test every potential problem, but attack the problem logically, in a step by stem, isolate and test manor, and keep notes.
Id also suggest swapping to a new fuel filter
once that tanks got a fresh 5 gallons for sure you can start logically locating the problems source, but don,t assume you have fuel, or fuel pressure at the fuel rails just because the gauge says you do, verify that fuel pressure , with a gauge, on the fuel rail and pour 5 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank, now the links below hold a great deal more info but id remind you to swap out the fuel filter in a case like this as a precaution, as it might be a contributing factor.
don,t assume its a fuel related problem, until you test and prove it, it might be a defective sensor, bad ground, bad electrical connection
and remember the gauge reads empty when theres still a bit less than two gallons in the fuel tank, to act as an emergency reserve, but at that fuel level the pump occasionally sucks air as the car moves, and limited fuel sloshes around the pump
