I got this off a different site but its rather informative so heres some info you might use.

I have a kit car that I am building and I am looking at ideas on what it will take to paint the car.
The car is a 16 foot 1967 Cobra (so you get an idea of what I am talking about).

One guy that is known to build/paint these cars said that materials would run me around $4000~$4500 (for all the primers, catalyst, reducers, clears etc (all Dupont)) to put a high quality paint on the car.

Remember this is for materials only, does this sound about right?

I am wondering because I am considering having the guy do the bodywork (fiberglass) and paint for the car.
If he is over inflating the paint costs, then I will stay away .
P.S. To do the body work and paint the he quoted $8500.

HERES WHAT A GUY IN THE BUSINESS RESPONDED WITH
Although I've used several other brands of paint and still do, DuPont has been the primary product that I've used for close to 20 years. IMHO, there is absolutely no way that he/you could possibly spend that much for all materials even using DuPont's top-of-the-line materials. I'd estimate $2200. TOPS for ALL materials related to painting and that includes sandpaper, tape, primers, basecoats and clears.

You can't see the entire car, but I spent about $1500. in total materials to paint the 58 Impala in my avatar. That's under-hood, inner fender wells, complete engine, transmission, trunk, door jambs...every piece of metal on the car including the interior. That includes all little nit-noy things like semi-gloss black spray cans for small parts, POR15 for underneath and inside doors...every item that could be classified as paint materials. I still have the receipts. I spared no expense on the little things. That was using DuPont ChromaBase and ChromaClear. The top-of-the-line ChromaPremier would have been about $400. more.

Bro, in my professional career, I've purchased close to two million bucks worth of DuPont materials. I repeat, there is no way he/you could spend that much on materials for a Cobra kit car.

BINGO!

hopefully it look similar to this when your done

IM FORCED TO AGREE! while Ive only painted, or helped paint and prep a few cars in my career , I remember very clearly spending only about $1000-$1200 on EVERYTHING to paint and prep each of these cars back in the 1980s-90s ,a 1969 road runner and a 1962 corvette, and a 1955 chevy, and that included a new paint gun, and hoses. now obviously costs have gone up, since then but $2500 seems to be at the limits of realistic cost to expect on materials and prep work, if your not counting labor to have someone else do the work.

Yes...$2-2,300 for paint materials is more in line. I have been in the body shop biz for 25 years or so, and use DuPont. Materials for the vehicle size we normally restore cost us a Minimum of $1,800 for a simple repaint, incliding all primers/sealers/base and clear. Some colors, like red and yellow, can cost more than $700/gallon for the base only. Jetstream blue, used on C-6 'vettes, is about $1,200/ gal. for just the base color. As a business owner, I usually mark up the paint materials 20%, to help make some profit on the job. BTW, we have painted about 10 replica Cobras, and none were refinished for less than $10K. The body seams and shapes can require considerable work to get right.
