CROSSFIRE SWAP TO CARB

HI, I CURRENTLY HAVE A 84 CROSSFIRE, WITH HEADERS,CHIP,AIR PUMP BY-PASS PULLY. AND I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE POWER I AM GETTING OUT OF IT. IITS TIME FOR A REBUILD AND I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD STEER ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I WAS LOOKING INTO THE EDELBROCK TOP END KIT THAT WOULD GIVE ME 400HP. THIS WOULD INVOLVE REBUILDING MY BOTTOM END ALSO TO 10-1 COMP RATIO. IS THIS A GOOD IDEA? AND I WILL BE MOVING TO FLORIDA IN THE NEXT 1-1 1/2 YEARS AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE SNIFFER TEST. HERE IN CANADA AN 84 IS EXEMPT FROM ANY EMMISSION TESTING. IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS PLEASE FORWARD THEM TO ME. ALSO I WOULDNT MIND SWAPPING TO AN TPI SETUP, ONLY IF ITS WORTH DOING.
THANKS
SAM

In July 1, 2000, the State of Florida abolished the auto emissions test requirement for all vehicles throughout the state. The smog-tackling program only lasted nine years and had often been a fiercely political issue for many Florida residents and legislators.

if you move here locally (royal palm beach area) I can help you with your swap

the edelbrock kit is NOT my first choice, theres better cams and head combos, but most require a 3.54:1-3.73:1 rear gear and a manual transmission or a 2800rpm-3000rpm stall converter to get near the full potential., Id strongly suggest getting the 3.73:1 rear gears BEFORE the swap

if your going to rebuild and to all the upgrades building a 383 wont cost much if any more to do.

you didn,t mention your transmission, or budget, but lets discuss options and how much of the project you really want to.. do,yourself.... avoid, or plan to upgrade

SORRY. I FORGOT TO MENTION, THE TRANNY IS A 4+3.
SEE MY CONCEARN ABOUT THE SNIFFER IS THAT I READ SOMEWARE FLORIDA WANTS TO PASS A EMISSION STATE SAME AS CALI. I AM NOT SURE HOW ACCURATE THIS IS.
I WILL TAKE IN ALL OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE...
THANKS

I live in Florida and Ive had no one mention bring back the emission testing EVERYONE but the state tax guys and a few environmental whack jobs HATED.
IT really served no purpose as most cars on the road are under 15 years old according to statistics I read and emission levels are generally very low.
yes theres a few exceptions but why punish the 95% or more for the actions of the few guys that can,t keep a car running at least semi efficiently.
if you have a cross fire 1984 corvette with dual throttle body injection your dealing with what is eventually a very restrictive set of heads fed by an extremely restrictive intake on an engine thats designed to operate at under 4000rpm, that makes a factory rated power curve under 220 hp.

your original cross fire throttle body injection intake was and is VERY RESTRICTIVE, there are far better intake manifolds, cylinder heads and cams available, to upgrade a cross fire corvette. , for both upgrading the TBI or swapping to a carburetor fueled engine

READ A FEW LINKS, and sub links, it should take you a few hours to read most of the related info but it could save you weeks of work and a good deal of ca$h

btw MY highly modified 383 has almost no problem passing emission testing, and it makes a good bit more hp than the stock engine ever did, if your engines correctly tuned it runs fairly clean, simply leaning out the fuel/air mix and changing the timing even without cats installed allowed my corvette to pass the emission testing for many years, and it passed easily with cats installed, after they eventually noticed there were no cats at one point.

SO YOU HAVE A 383 UNDER THE CROSSFIRE?

no!Ive got a custom EFI intake based on a totally re-machined stealth ram, but IVE built and installed several 383 engine IN 1984 corvettes and installed both various cross rams, crossfire intakes and carb intakes in the past, your car will easily accept a 383 long block if you match the compression and cam timing to match the intake system of your choice, youll gain more torque and hp with the displacement increase, but better heads, a cam and a better intake will boost the results noticeably

see my problem is,there are too many options and suggestions given to me and honestly i am more confused than ever. i want a street car not a daily driver but something i can take out for a nice cruise and at the same time have some bragging rights. the other day i had a sleeper civic smoke me like i was standing still. i am sure you understand were i am coming from. my budget is fair and i understand the limits. i am not looking for a 9 sec 1/4 mile car but 10-11 would be nice. give me your input.
sam :?

you better get a bit realistic, a 10-11 second car based on even a 383 that can be driven as a weekend toy on the street is going to be very expensive, your stock vette probably runs mid 15s, getting it into the low 13s or high 12s is doable on a reasonable budget and will make your car faster than most street cars
that will require a boost from the stock 205hp to about 370-400hp which with the right parts is something you could expect, think about that almost DOUBLE the power you have currently

so then give me some pointers in the right direction to achive these 370-400hp goal. i dont want to experiment, i am looking into some proven results. please advise.
i will keep the 4+3 tranny. i can get a set of 3.73:1 gears to start. i have the headman headers on now. whats next after that?

also i fogot to mension, my rear tire size is 285/35/19 will the 3:73 gears work well or is there a better setup to go to.

Also i forgot to mension that my rear tire size is 285/35/19. will the 3:73 gears work well with thie size or do i need a different setup?

yes a 3.73 gear will work just fine with those tires/wheels, if you do mostly highway driving a 3.45:1 or 3.54 rear gear is an option but if your mostly using the car a a weekend toy and short trips the 3.73:1 is preferred.

is there any specific part number or type for the 3:73's . also i heard a 4:10 would be ok too? what's your input.

do i need the whole diff, or can i get mine rebuilt. it seems cheaper to buy just the gear set and install it into my diff on the car?

now I,d point out that you can make the car run fairly well with a different cam, better heads and a new intake.
carbs operate best at a fuel pressure level of about 5 psi, your cross fire throttle body injection fuel pump operates at about 12psi-15 psi thus a fuel pressure regulator swap will be required and a different fuel pump is not a bad idea.

viewtopic.php?f=55&t=211

THE OFFY base IS STILL CURRENTLY MADE, and can be adapted, to use twin throttle body injection or two 500 cfm carbs rather easily, swaping to a much better cam will allow you to make a good deal more power but swapping to a higher stall speed torque converter and a 3.54:1-3.73:1 rear gear is going to make the choice of effective and useful cams far better.
your cam choice will depend on the cars gearing ,compression, displacement and drive train, so do the required research or at least ask questions before selecting a cam to match your application.
If you want to keep the rather impressive and slightly exotic cross fire look the offanhauser dual quad intakes a great option.

the basic crossfire manifold is a HUGE restriction EVEN if ported to the max, the XRAM is nothing but a single plane carb intake with a mickey-mouse adapter to allow the TBI injection to be bolted on.

read thru this

http://www.swko.net/~lionsden/crossfire.htm

either the OFFY or the SY1 intake base, with a custom top plate will be a HUGE improvement, easily able to support 500hp or more on a correctly configured engine with decent heads like the AFR 210cc or AFR 195cc

http://www.airflowresearch.com/210sbc_rh.php

and a decent cam like this crower

http://www.crower.com/misc/cam_spec/cam_finder.php?part_num=00404&x=25&y=17

installed in a 10.5-11.0:1 cpr 383

but keep in mind youll need a 3000rpm stall converter and 3.73:1 rear gear to run those
keep in mind INTAKE HEADS AND CAM and COMPRESSION ALL must be upgraded to get full flow into the heads , so that the power levels your looking for can be achieved, and the stall and rear gear must be changed to use the significantly higher rpm power band effectively, but theres no comparing the results after the mods are correctly made, youll have well over 140 plus MORE hp,(plus) if you do things correctly

summit racing sells a complete dual quad intake assembly you cold use to swap if your looking to change from the cross fire injection, youll also obviously want to verify the distributor you use fits and functions, the required fuel supply issues are dealt with and sensors and matching gauges are correctly connected or replaced .
the selling point of using dual quads is you still have a good performing induction system that if properly tuned makes for both a nice conversation starter and exceptional performance, the problem with that selection is that about 80% of the guys I see that have a dual quad induction set up are basically clueless as to the fine points of tuning the engine correctly.

if you were local and were willing to buy the required parts it would be a fun project to work on Id be glad to help with, but its just not that difficult to do so don,t think this upgrade to either a different intake manifold or even swapping to a carb equipped engine and hooking up a few gauges is a huge problem, it might take a few weekends but its certainly something anyone whos willing to do a bit of reading can do
