cute story from years back

back in about 1966-67 I had a shop teacher in 12th grade who had a Porsche 911S or something similar in a semi race Porsche,
I can,t remember exactly, what he had done to its engine at that time ,
but if Porsche offered any speed parts or upgrades he sure knew about them
,ordered them, installed them, and bragged about the fact that he probably had one of only 2 or 3 cars like it at the time in the states,

his car was far faster than it was when he brought it home from the Porsche dealer.

shop was my first period class in 12 grade , and well one December day the shop teacher comes into class and hes noticeably upset, it took a few days before we found out why,
it seems that the previous weekend he had been out cruising on the expressway,
where he seemed to get his kicks embarrassing muscle cars ,

by waiting until they were cruising at 60 mph then waiting for them to try to get him to race, here he would slowly accelerate to about 75mph then punch the throttle to the floor,
knowing most muscle cars at the time had 3.54:1--to--4.11:1 rear gears.... and topped out at maybe 130 mph........ he just walked away showing tail lights,
as the Porsche could easily hit 155mph ,
which was unheard of in that time,
he had done this to several of the fast cars owned by the richer kids at school,

like a certain GTO with a seriously hopped up 421 with dual quads,
owned by a kid whose father ran the service department at the local Pontiac dealership ,
who was acknowledged as about the fastest car in our school,
he had easily out run that car , early in the year.
and developed a reputation for having a really fast car which he loved,
bathed in the reputation, drank the heady feeling he was some how better than most of his peers... and justified his existence with, owning that GTO.
well, it was dark, on his trip home and he saw two low headlights come up on his bumper and thought, Austin healey 3000,
which was a fairly fast car also, for the time ,but he decided to show this clown in the healey ,
his tail lights on a long stretch of road with no cross streets or exits we all knew he traveled on his way home.
remember it gets dark early in December so this was at about 8-9 pm or later and full dark, long before the interstate had street lights.

well the way he told it was the head lights came up on his rear bumper fairly fast so he decided to embarrass the crap out of this healey, and did the usual deal where he accelerated to 75-80 mph then punched it, well he looks back at 120mph and the head lights have not dropped back at all, as he hit 145 mph he hears a screaming engine exhaust ,scream past and a red Ferrari 365 California goes by him doing easily 30 mph faster and disappears in second's into the distance....its amazing what 12 cylinders of exhaust spinning 7000rpm can sound like up close on a dark deserted high way,... he was totally depressed for almost two days.
