Deer hunting in Ohio
I've never been deer hunting and decided to put it on my bucket list. So I'm already planning for Nov/Dec 2018. So I'm in the market for a gun. What do you use? What caliber? Gun preference? I'm not new to guns and shooting (I own a 22 rifle, 12 ga home defense shotgun, and 3 handguns), just new to hunting. Thanks.

obviously you start by looking over the states hunting regulations
http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/hunting...trapping-regulations/deer-hunting-regulations

options
Shotguns ,
10 gauge or smaller shotgun using one ball or one rifled slug per barrel

(rifled shotgun barrels are permitted when using shotgun slug ammunition).
Muzzleloading rifle: .38 caliber or larger.
Muzzleloading shotgun: 10 gauge or smaller using one ball per barrel.
Handgun: With 5-inch minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger.

Straight-walled cartridge rifles in the following calibers: New this year!
All straight-walled cartridge calibers from a minimum of .357 to a maximum of .50.
Shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles can be loaded with
no more than three shells in the
chamber and magazine combined.

Id then look over the options and select the best option you can afford,
personally Id say,a rifle in 45 caliber certainly fits the regulations and ,
would be an excellent option as its potentially accurate to over 300 yards.
a BLR in 450 marlin,
(50 grains of IMR3031 under a 405 remington bullet works very well)
or
a bolt action in 458 win
(you can load it to 45/70 power levels)
(55 grains of IMR3031 under a 405 remington bullet works very well in a 458 mag)

(IF you hand-load)(cast bullets are an option)
those options posted above, would be the best available options,
if price was not a huge concern
and
a marlin lever action carbine in 44 mag would cost less and still be very effective,
out to about 150-200 yards with the correct ammo.
and a bolt action rifled shotgun would be a decent third choice,
also accurate and useful out to about 150-200 yards with the correct ammo.
obviously you can block magazine capacity to the required two cartridge, limit if you need too.
yes your handgun might be able to kill deer, but most handguns are not very effective past 30-40 yards ,
unless they were designed for hunting and a 357 mag is minimal in power.
I used a model 28 S&W "6 357 mag revolver on several hunts , yes it works but its not nearly as effective as a 44 mag with a 8"-10" barrel
