Distributor rotor phase

THANKS FOR POSTING THE LINKED INFO/video

theres a ton of small but really useful things like this, that you need to understand, that do make a big difference in how your cars engine performs,
now many guys might think that simply changing the distributor timing , by rotating the distributor with a timing light is the same thing ,
but look carefully, its not !
your dealing with two separate factors, ,
with one, IGNITION TIMING, is dealing with "when the spark arcs from the rotor to the contact in the cap to ignite the cylinder, IN RELATION TO PISTON POSITION AS IT ROTATES,and CAM TIMING, and as the spark reaches the spark plug, in short your trying to control cylinder pressure in relation to crank rotation.

" while the others dealing with
the position of the rotor center-line IN THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP, in relation to the contacts IN THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP,when the arc jumps, so you can maintain a minimal distance thru the whole ignition advance curve, thus maximizing current to the plugs and reducing ignition, cross fire potential.

STEP #1 is ALWAYS verify TDC and your timing tab and damper reflect REALITY, and if you failed to get the cam degreed in it could be indexed incorrectly causing major problems
a few minutes reading links and sub links will help here!

Does a rotor phasing problem typically happen when you use an external device to adjust timing ?

But when you are using a self container distributor, then most likely there will be NO problem.

From the reading I have done, It does seem to be more of an issue when your electronically controlling the advance externally. Like with an EFI setup or one of the digital ignition boxes that have the ability to control timing electronicly. Like http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignitions/6530_-_MSD_Digital_Programmable_6AL-2.aspx

It's probably something to check regardless though.
