electric fuel pump

I have an electric fuel pump on my 57'. it has one wire to ground and one wire to the junction box on the firewall where it gets it's juice. Shouldnt there be an automatic shut off feature? Or at least a return fuel line from the carb back to the tank. Right now it just constantly runs.

thanks!

electric fuel pumps generally are designed to run constantly, in series with a return style fuel pressure regulator and a return line, the flow of fuel thru the pump absorbs heat and cools the pump, the frequently are connected to power thru a oil pressure sensor that breaks the electrical connection unless theres 5 psi of oil pressure

keep in mind that you'll generally want, no less than a 140 gallon per hour rated electric pump that provides that flow at 6 psi for a performance carb application, and if the hp will exceed 550 hp upgrading to a 8an line size (1/2" ID) is advised as the typical 6AN (3/8" ID) lines might not provide the required flow

the oil pressure switch might be defective, if the fuel pump won,t run, even if its new
and at $11-$35 Id just swap it out if your concerned

the single terminal sensor runs the oil gauge the dual connector runs the fuel pump ONCE theres about 5 psi of oil pressure but they do fail and they do leak oil when they fail and both are commonly located near the distributor
