engine and transmission replacement

I have recently had my L48 (bored and stroked) and transmission (350) rebuilt for my 1977 corvette. I am slowly getting to the point where the engine and transmission will be in along with installation of headers and new radiator. My question is can I start the engine with the drive shaft off. My first thought is yes but I am new to this so I want to be sure. Also do you have any suggestions for me in this process. Your help has and continues to be appreciated. Jack

If he shuts off the ignition, but the engine wants to continue running (called dieseling or engine run-on)??? He wont have a way to stop the motor quickly and it seems this would be rough on the engine to continue to run while you try to think of a solution. I guess you could turn the ignition back on while you're thinking. If everything goes right, then no problem, but...... You would want to know that the idle setting is very low, this would help to make sure the motor quits running when you turn the ignition off. The motor is new and has a different compression ratio now, no telling for sure what it will do when it's time to turn it off after break-in.
