finally got my car running again!

now i just have to fix the small bugs and error!

for those that dont know what i been threw.

whats was supposed to be just a new timing chain set turned out to be a complets new set of lifters, camshaft, cloyes timing chain set with gears, timing cover, and balancer.

This was my first time ever doing this so i had many mistakes to leading why i ended up with many new parts.

While i was putting the new timing set in, i ended up breaking a bolt in the camshaft. So i had to remove it and take it to a machine shop, but when they saw it they said it was better off with a new one. so i ordered a new one with the help of Grumpyvette. While i was waiting for all my parts to come in, i did some cleaning of my old parts. i also learned and got so much help from grumpy on how to install everything the right way.

i also have a video i will post of the first start up.

All this would not of happened with the help of grumpy, who was there with all the calls i made for help. and also for my gf who was there helping me not make anymore mistakes on my car lol.
 
IT looks like you've learned a good deal in the process, congratulations on the progress, and BTW love the BLUE valve covers :mrgreen:

IM always glad to help where I can,
just think of the experience as "paid dues" in the hot rodders school of learning, most of us will have gone thru a similar process in acquiring skills/experience, those few that enjoy knowing that they were responsible for doing the work and getting it done correctly have justifiably got a feeling of some superiority over those guys that just pay dealerships to do their work for them.

hey paul i cant get the timing mark anywhere near the timing tab on the balancer. i even got it to top dead center again and used the timing gun to check the mark and i dont see it anywhere at all. do i need to also disconect the vacuum hoes from the dist?

step one is verifying that the damper and the timing tab indicate the true TDC

step two is following the shop manual instructions for timing, chances are excellent that your not doing part of the timing process correctly or your timing tab or damper marks are incorrect if you can,t get the timing light to show the marks close to the intended area

ok well i think i am going to buy that tdc piston stop tool. Do i have to go slow and be careful while turning it when it hits the stop?

YES BE VERY CAREFUL ,AND TURN THE ENGINE BYE HAND, ( BTW IT generally helps to leave it out of gear and remove the spark plugs, during the process)
and you can make a very effective piston stop from an old spark plug, just bust out the center porcelain, and J&B weld in a 3" long bolt with its end ground rounded and fairly smooth

obviously they can be purchased cheaply, but its not a great deal of effort to fabricate one either

i would j&b weld it to the end? so all 3" would go into the spark plug hole?

no! you J&B weld the 3" bolt sticking thru the center of the remaining metal collar threaded section of the spark plug that remains after the porcelains been knocked out of the plug that leaves about 2" plus, extending into the combustion chamber
