flushing a transmission

in many cases, if you buy a known to be good , used transmission, or buy one new to install in your car, youll want to pull the transmission oil pan and replace the transmission fluid filter, and install a couple magnets in the corners of the transmission oil pan, and flush out the trans fluid from the radiator or trans cooler lines, to reduce the chance of any burnt crud from the previous transmission or just remove any moisture in the lines.
If the fluid in the old transmission was dark, brown, cloudy or smelled burnt, its mandatory to flush the lines and old torque converter before installing a new transmission
many guys think they can just drain the transmission pan then add several quarts of new fluid like an oil change, but on a transmission the fluid cool lines and torque converter hold several quarts that will not drain under those conditions, so you would need to repeat the process, then drive the car and repeat the drain & drive process about 3 times to remove most of the old fluid

I've changed the fluid when doing regular maintenance on two of my cars. Trans in the car. Takes two people.

1Buy about 15 quarts of fluid.
2 Buy 4-5 feet of clear plastic tubing. Got mine at Lowes.
3 Find the output cooler line from trans and disconnect at the radiator.
4 Place plastic tube over cooler line and run to 5 gal container. Make sure the tubing is visible from the drivers seat.
5 One person pours fluid in while the engine is running.
6 Person in car shuts the engine off the first sign of bubbles or before.
7 Add 3-4 quarts of fluid with engine off.
8 Repeat steps 5 thru 7 until you see the fluid color change. The color change was obvious when I did it.
