in many cases, if you buy a known to be good , used transmission, or buy one new to install in your car, youll want to pull the transmission oil pan and replace the transmission fluid filter, and install a couple magnets in the corners of the transmission oil pan, and flush out the trans fluid from the radiator or trans cooler lines, to reduce the chance of any burnt crud from the previous transmission or just remove any moisture in the lines.
If the fluid in the old transmission was dark, brown, cloudy or smelled burnt, its mandatory to flush the lines and old torque converter before installing a new transmission
many guys think they can just drain the transmission pan then add several quarts of new fluid like an oil change, but on a transmission the fluid cool lines and torque converter hold several quarts that will not drain under those conditions, so you would need to repeat the process, then drive the car and repeat the drain & drive process about 3 times to remove most of the old fluid
