Grumpy,
Hope you can help. 1999 Automatic LS1 had recently started making a tink-tink-tink sound only when stepping on it hard. when in 1st it is really noticed. Once car shifts to 2nd the sound will be more difficult to make, I assume less torque is on the flywheel. 3rd will be fine etc. No sound is made if you accelerate normal, such as when a Police car is behind you..Sound seems to come from Bell-housing area, flywheel. I removed the rubber inspection boot from Bell and flywheel bolts and such are OK...Have you ever encountered a starter gear make this sound if its defective, such as not retracting all the way back in ? Can the flywheel make this noise if rubs teeth with starter gear ? For the record, car is quiet and smooth going down Highway. Please advise. Thanks for any Help,
AugieDogie B.T.W. Sound is coming from Bell Housing area. Upon flywheel inspection I tapped it and the sound was just like I"m hearing. Driveshaft has no U-Joints or Torque tube as its also refered , Just 2 Bearings in the tube
that shaft rides in.Trans. is in the back all are bolted solid to each other. Sorry I did not mention this earlier.

any metal contact in the drive train might be the cause but the first thing ID do is put the car up on a two post frame lift and spin the drive train and look for loose u-joints and loose bolts and potential indicators where somethings rubbing like fresh rub marks.
don,t assume its caused by the starter, verify where the noise comes from.
Id also look for a loose starter, loose fly wheel or flex plate, loose bell housing, bolts, loose motor mounts, loose accessory's, and you might want to try filling up the car with race octane fuel once because it might be detonation in the cylinders your hearing.
a good light and a video inspection tool helps, pulling the plugs and a close detailed inspection may help as would a compression test.
if you approach the problem as first needing to locate and isolate the cause, and area the sounds coming from, then working on correcting the issue youll tend to have better luck.
is the sound in the front? from the engine or, in the transmission or in the rear differential, is it only under hard acceleration? are you pulling any trouble codes?
Id also look up any RECALLS on the internet, related to your year car, your unlikely to be the only one having any particular issue and getting other peoples input helps at times. but getting the car up on a lift and having a well lighted and a very close inspection of all the parts in the drive train , suspension components and brakes ,sure will tend to help locate the problem
