Hi my names Ryan.

I've got a vintage sbc race engine that maybe I can find some help with over here.
I look forward to any new info and help I can get.

Welcome Ryan.
Grumpy will want to know what combo SBC Engine you have.
Are You Racing again ?
Or building s Vintage Racecar Period correct with Vintage parts ?
There is a strong following again for Vintage Drag Race Cars Restored.
Some choose to use Modern Performance Parts . Want to Compete again .

Thank you 87vette. This is a vintage non z28 302 chevy. I believe it's got ties to Dennis Fischer "Fischer Engineering Company" from way back. I'm just a young pup (27) and at this time I could be considered just an arm chair racer. I have though, "in my short time in this world", managed to collect a few good base parts to eventually build a race car. I spend a great deal of my time reading to expand my knowledge and I'm very skillful at transferring that knowledge over to the tools. I've always had a deep passion for short stroke high rpm engines so that's where I lay a great deal of my focus. I'll soon start a thread to get a little more in depth on the engine and my intentions. I do have threads in other forums that haven't netted me to much overall information about anything I have but it's great to show and tell.

I know Grumpy pretty well.
He don't like short stroke Ultra High Revving engines.

It depends what You want or are doing.
There was a guy from my area here that set A National Record in a Slingshot Dragster back in the early 1970's.
His Powerplant was a 301 cubic inch small block Chevrolet.
Rear Diff Gears were 5.57:1 in a Narrowed 1957-64 Pontiac Rear End.
He Ran High 9's in the 1/4 mile.
I recall Eddies Betz Dagster well.
It was 1996 and my 1970-1/2 Trans Am RAIV Was parked next to at a Car Show.

It was a Super Reliable 301 SBC.
Very Similar to 302 Sbc builds.
I was told it would Rev to 8,000-9,000 Rpm every time.

The Modern thinking is not to build any less than 400 cubic inches SBC.

LS Is based off of 376 cubic inches to 427 ci.
376 ci preferred because Turbo chargers to match are much less $ Money.

Big Block Power You want 454-632 cubic inches.

If Pontiac V8 400 cubic inches just Fine.
Super Torque & HP Had with 455.
All Race 9-8-7 seconds 477-535-600+ cubic inches.
Turbocharging is in with Pontiac also.

BBC Best Big Block for most.
Lots of parts out there used & new.

With Drag Racing Reborn Recent, Most Notable From Street Outlaws TV Show, Many Old Time Racers Alive Yet are coming out again.
I see them on my Pontiac Forums.

You might have an engine very desirable to another.
Rebuild Resell.
Or Keep it for yourself .

Not many Vintage Race Engines Survived all intact.
Carefull thought should be given to modify or not.

Welcome Ryan. Another newbie here. How much of the 302 do you have? (Rotating assembly, pistons , heads etc.) What is the application? Are you doing the work, if not, a reliable machine shop may be in order. Make a plan, and buy parts that suit the application. And lastly, how deep are your pockets? Good luck on your build, it seems there is a vault full of knowledge here to help you out.

yes welcome to the website!
please post what your goals are, what components you already have and any questions you might have.
yes Ive built lots of high rpm engines in the past, (usually for stock cars or off the trailer race cars)
but as Brian noted they are not always the ideal choice in a street driven, daily transportation engine choice for a car.
obviously the engine components used should match the intended application, if your building a dragster engine,
its going to be operated in the 5000rpm-7500rpm range most of the time so thats going to dictate the component choices.
an engine built for that application would be less than ideal in a car used for long trips or for stop and go traffic,
