I see someone has already beat me to a cam selection question on the main board. I thought I'd bypass that and go straight to the source. I'm considering changing my cam over the winter to a Hyd Roller. I like the sound of the Comp Cams Thumper but I'm not sure that's the way to go for me. My 66 BelAir will be mostly used (99.9%) going to cruises and car shows. It has a M-20 Muncie, 3.73 rear gears and a 496 with headers. Right now I have a street Avenger Holley 870 but am considering other options. Can you recommend something?

first question, why are you thinking of changing and whats your goals here,
youve obviously spent a good deal of time and cash on this car, if its just cruising and your current cam functions correctly why are you changing and spending more money
if I don,t know the goals its hard to match the results of a cam swap to the application and current parts
why do you want to change cams, what is the current cam choice doing you don,t like?

Hi Grumpy,
I'm just not happy with this cam. It just doesn't seem to be right for me. Most of my cruising is in the 1200-2200 range. This cam doesn't seem to work well below 2000.
It may very well be that I can't have this much head runner volume and a low end cam. I'm just not sophisticated enough to make that decision. If I do change I'd prefer to go to a roller setup. That may be just an opinion but nevertheless it is a choice I seem to be comfortable with.
Maybe going to 4.11s may be a better choice :) I really only travel to one show that's 100 miles away. Most of the rest are in the 10-50 mile range.

When I bought this engine I really thought I'd have more low end but it just doesn't feel like I do. For now I'm doing a lot of research and deciding what to do or even if I'm going to do anything.

You ask my goal? Well in a nutshell its this:
I want an engine that can cruise at low rpms and still sounds mean. (I know... everyone wants that)

Any considerations are welcome.
Thanks,
