hey grumpy? about rem 7400? I have a friend selling one cheap and I wonder if its worth buying?

I guess the answer depends on what you intend to do with it, the caliber, condition and price, I know from experience that if you hunt heavy brush where ranges tend to be under 100 yards or so that they work , or function, but they don,t have a huge fan base clamoring for them, at least in this area...
Ive often wondered why Ive seldom heard anything but praise for the Remington 7600 slide actions ,
(in fact Ive got one in 35 whelen thats exceptionally accurate, and has proven to be a fine elk and deer rifle.)
but Ive seldom, in fact, thinking about it...I,ve NEVER found anyone with experience that owned a 7400 or a older 742 semi auto that was happy with theirs.
(maybe its just a local thing, but I doubt it!)
since the rifles are similar I find that odd!
and I know several people that own BAR rifles that are thrilled with them,Ive got one friend with a BAR in caliber 270 win thats sold most of his other rifles , because he thinks that BAR does everything well, so its not a tendency to put down the semi auto rifles.
Ive owned a 742 and a 7400 in caliber 30/06 in the past, both were finicky about the loads that shot well and neither would hold groups under 1.5" even after weeks of trying loads , which is strange because of the first 5 hand load combinations I tried in my 7600 remington 35 whelen two were sub 1" off the bench at 100 yards (both used 250 speers)and one load was a consistent 1.3" group,200 grain hornadys) (all three loads fine for ELK)
my 7600 in 35 whelen will generally produce 1"-1.5" 100 yard 3 shot groups of a good bench rest.
I have always used the 250 speer bullet,

a 215 fed primer, and Ive used these powders
best accuracy with these top three, but all six produce decent groups in my rifle, best accuracy generally near 2400fps
