High voltage at ignition wire to distributor

While troubleshooting my ignition issue I decided to check the voltage at the power supply to the distributor. At idle it was around 13 volts but while raising the rpm’s the voltage kept climbing, I stopped around 17.8 volts somewhere around 3000 rpm’s.

Going to look around MSD’s web site to see what the high voltage limit is on the E-curve and the 6AL box. It looks as if the voltage regulator may have failed in my alternator. It’s a single wire 100 amp alternator that I got with the Zoop’s serpentine set up. I’m going to try the local alternator shop to see if they can test it and make any needed repairs.

yep your regulator is definitely toast... the regulator should limit voltage to like 2-3 volts more than standard battery (12.6V battery so 15.6 max) so that the excess can charge the battery. if you are seeing 17VDC anywhere in the system something is definitel wrong with the regulator. after you get that sorted dont be surprised if your MSD box is FUBAR, i messed one up once just jump starting a car so be advised, they are picky about voltage AND amperage...

Once I get my 1963 GP Back on the road soon I am going to take time to build up 10-20 Alternators of my own build ups. CS144's.
Ford 3G & 4G.
A few Densos.
And a few Vintage Pontiac , Olds, & Chevy 10MT High Torque models.

Keep them on hand.
All aftermarket electrical rebuilds lackluster.
Mine is not.
