HK45 or HK P30

Welp-

Saturday I dropped by the gun shop. Most of my paperwork is in order - I just have to wait a few days to get my permanent license then I can request a permit to own my own hardware.

I originally had my mind set on an FN 9mm or possibly a 5-7. Ironically, FNs are not immediately available - you can wait some time for one to come in. Glocks never grew on me, neither did the CZs… so it's down to the HK.

Three are two models I am looking at the HK45 (a .45) and the HK P30 (9mm or .40, but I'm interested in the 9mm)

The reason I'm interested in the HKs is for their decocker and external hammer. The HK45 is similar to the Sig and the FN - it's the same lever as the safety with. On the HK P30 it's oddly at the rear of the slide. Build is better than FN and not quite Sig.

I was originally leaning HK P30 9mm because a box is 1/2 price compared to the .45 and I intend to shoot every other week - as I do now. You can also fit 15 + 1.

On the other hand, the HK45 you can only fit 10 + 1. However the trigger reset is much shorter than the 9mm which is unusually long.

Overall build quality, reliability, durability and accuracy are high… with a slight advantage going to the .45

Soooo, I think for the well-place decocker, slightly better build/accuracy + better trigger, I'll be going most likely .45

On Jan 18 the P30 comes in - based on direct comparison, $$$ and $$$ for a box, I'll make a final decision and pull the trigger ;-)

if they allow you to reload ammo you can cut cost of range ammo significantly, obviously i have zero idea what powder and primers cost over there but currently primers over here cost between 3 and 5 cents each and powder is about $30 a lb, youll generally pay less than 12-15 cents a shot for good accurate hand loads if you cast your own projectiles vs the factory ammo cost of 40-55 cents a shot.
now obviously the press, bullet sizer, molds etc. will cost more up front, but the $270-$350 in basic reloading equipment, you paid gets paid off in the first 1200-1500 cartridges and from then on your way ahead financially.
If your interested I can probable find some used stuff even cheaper, in fact i see it listed on craigs list and Ebay regularly

Awesome - THANKS Grumpy! I amy take you up on that.

A buddy of mine loads his own. I may well do the same… but this being Belgium, it may indeed require yet another license. I'll find out.

I'll start by figuring out the $$$ difference 9mm to .45 I suspect it's a full factor.

Update - 'made a down payment for a Sig 226

Oh… what made the difference… The Sig was $160 cheaper. Apparently the HK supply is monopolized - ergo more expensive than it should be.

That and no safety switch = not a fan of safety switches.

Bought a safe to put it in…

Still waiting on paperwork……

a safe, that looks like that one is made and sold by SENTRY SAFEs thru various stores like home depot, over on this side of the pond,
my son bought his safe that looked like that , it was a thin sheet steel , dry wall, and plastic box that weights about 60lbs
my son, forgot his combo and did not want to do the research required to get the combo from the manufacturer so he asked me to open his safe
(with the understanding that it would be irreparably damaged)
it took less than 2 minutes with a 3 foot pry bar to pop open.
a safe like that is fine for keeping out curious kids but not much security, if its like the one my son purchased.

Wow thanks! Those are eye-opening videos…

Indeed - this one was $300 and I have it mostly to keep the kids off of it. I also has some fire resistance qualities, so that's a plus. I have no illusion that if stolen (I will bolt it to the floor) it would be fairly easy to crack…

I'll certainly feel safer that it is there, tho'.

This model seemed a bit beefier than the others he had on sale… That's why I opted of this one.. nutting fancy.

Got a letter from provincial governor's office: "please transfer 100 Euro and we'll consider your request for the pistol."

At least they were very polite…

$$$ transferred. Hopefully they will look favorably on my request...

sounds like they are far from shy about asking for a BRIBE to speed up rather that SHIT-CAN your request!

I like the way they put in the letter that if they turn you down… the $$$ is not refundable. They seriously charge you that much $$$ and you need to transfer it over...

i about died laughing reading that just now... oh well, money makes the world go round.

on topic, sigs are great guns, my first pistol was a 229 in 9mm and i thought it was so great i gave it to my mom to replace her old .357 and she loves it. (i stopped carrying and just keep a 12ga by the headboard nowadays... when i carry lots of cash ill pull a glock out of the safe and say a quick prayer for the guy i have to use it on.)

i got the sig used and several years old and between the old lady and i theres probably been 10,000 rounds put through it without an issue. just rinse and repeat as they say. cant say enough good things about the sig.

This week everything seems to be coming together all at once - air cooled engine making progress, car in for a respray, chevy is back and -presumably- the pistol will be there this week… or at least approved.

I'm a big Sig fan. Glocks just never grew on me. I just hate 'em. : - ///// I have my reasons… but none of them any good.

Ive carried a GLOCK 20 10mm for easily 15 years now but I fully understand why many guys are not all that enthralled, with the design
I used to carry a S&W 1006 and I think its got some design flaws but its still a bit more accurate than the glock and certainly feels like a better built pistol

I personally think the 10mm is the perfect hand gun defensive caliber , a 155 grain hollow point 40 caliber projectile at 1450fps-1475fps will certainly produce a devastating wound with a single well placed hit!
Ive used both 10mm handguns on deer and theres zero doubt that your able to get the job done at arms length or out at 30-40 yards if forced too, very effectively with a single well placed hit, so if forced to defend my family I feel confident in the pistols capability if i do my job correctly placing a shot center mass on some creep whos busted into my home some night, intent on doing us harm.

dorian ive had alot of people tell me they just dont like glocks and i respect that, they are ugly, they arent very scary looking, and depending on the size of your hand the 10mm and .45 offerings (that arent sf small frame versions) can be really a PITA to use. ive literally only had ONE malfunctioin requiring immediate action with a glock EVER: i have had one shell get eaten before being completely ejected in probably 20k rounds that ive put through four or five glocks over the past ten years. the damn things just work... i cant guarantee their function like i know i can guarantee a revolvers, for example, immediate action for a revolver is to just keep squeezing the trigger, all semi auto pistols have to have some sort of reaction action to malfunctions, but man they work good. i never had a malfunction with my sig but it doesnt have nearly the rounds through it that my glocks do, although i think i take good care of my tools and they will take good care of me... my main reason for purchasing a glock is because they are cheap, fast and reliable... hell i cant even get a car with all three of those qualities so you cant beat that

then again im kind of a weird gun guy in that i would rather build an ak 47 or 74 before i spent my money on any of the overpriced under performing black gun variants that have saturated the rifle market today. (as a gun to run at a range or during a zombie apocalypse, i wouldnt hunt with either an AR or an AK variant)

Cop came by today asking questions about my Sig pistol request.

Wanted to see my safe… getting closer… I guess?

Ok it's nearly April 15… two months later. Still now word. I'm told they typically take three months.

Wow - is this like a 3-month waiting period? What are they doing with that file for such a long time?????
