Hmmmm do you guys think this is a blown head gaskets (video)

Steam (???) comes out of both tailpipes but, I have a balancing tub. (left seems more than right) This is after a 20 minute drive. But if I drive for an hour... the results seem the same.

Notice it seems to come and go on a 10 - 20 second period. It's about 50 degrees out here.

As longs as the rad is topped up, it is easy to cool the beast. I lose about a quart and a half every 100 miles. I don't see an external leak... but I don't exclude it.

Will check radiator cap when it cools for excess pressure, excess bubbles, some indication of oil in coolant.

Will also change the oil tomorrow and look for coolant there.

Will also pull and inspect the plugs...

Cheers,

D.

looks like the internal pressure in the engine cylinders is leaking into the coolant system, pressure on the coolant system, reaches a certain level
(probably a small pin hole leak thats only going to get worse)
and its forced into the engines cylinders , reducing pressure in the coolant system then as the pressure bleeds off just a bit, the flow rate of coolant drops momentarily until the pressure rebuilds.

I see... so cylinder gasses escapes into coolant. Pressure builds and coolant finds its way back in to the cylinders and out the tailpipes...

Coolant pressure drops momentarily and stops seeping in cylinders... vapor stops for a few seconds. Right?

Plugs come out when this is cool...

I suspect left bank.

Thanks Grumpy!

Id suspect you'll find one or possibly two spark plugs looking steam cleaned, compared to the rest
(pictures would be great)
now it could also be a cracked head or block, but lets hope its just a head gasket

I'll keep pics coming all the way through tear down and rebuild...

Which one does not belong here? You remember Sesame Street...

Does that look steamed to you?

#3 and maybe #5 looks like its extra clean?
but most plugs in a bad cylinder tend to look even more steam cleaned

Heheheh, extra clean...

Maybe this is a small internal leak?

youll find out once you pull it down for close inspection,(darn I wish you were local so I could help you out, I've got the air tools and lift etc)

Hmmm, I looked at 3 & 5... 5 may be a bit steam cleaned too. This suggests a gasket failure, no?

I have a stand, a (small) cherry picker, and a reasonable compressor... The only issue is I am working on a cobble stone driveway. I am considering pulling just the head...

Unless you think I should pull the engine and have it checked for cracks...

I would not pull the whole engine UNTIL I found it was required, ID suggest pulling the drivers side head first, and carefully inspect it, if you find your problem and you can correct it with a head gasket replacement then , thats as far as ID suggest you go until your ready to do rather extensive upgrades, it may be just a simple head gasket replacement will cure your problem.
with the correct tools thats at most a 3-5 hour job, taking it easy and having a few beers, now it may get to be a (PROJECT) if you find that more than a simple head gasket replacements required, but hope for the best!

Agreed. I take it the damage on gasket is not always visible ?
usually its OBVIOUS ,but occasionally, if it caught early enough, it requires careful inspection of the head, block and gasket, to see the damaged area, if it just a small fault, be sure to clean and inspect the heads for cracks, between the valves and the blocks lifter gallery for cracks and the intake and exhaust ports and gaskets for clues as to the source of the problem
obviously, if you have coolant getting mixed with the oil theres a coolant leak into the engine, you could be dealing with a blown head gasket, leaking intake gasket, cracked cylinder head, cracked block, loose valve guide or other issues so you need to tear it down and locate the source of the coolant getting into your oil before it does major damage, which it will rather quickly

Reading, reading, reading...

Ordered spare gaskets from Summit this morning.

parts on the way... fingers crossed that it is only a head gasket...

Hmmmm had some spare time... Decided it might be wise to check under other head...

Glad I did..

the pictures not really clear and detailed enough,(at least on my computer screen) what did you find, it looks like a steam cut groove in the head surface but its not clear enough in the photo to be sure.
if thats the case a good cylinder head repair shop can easily re-weld and resurface the cylinder head back to good as new

From what I can see... The heads looks ok. I thinks it's just gunk. Still, heads are going in for a once over.

Right. Heads went into the shop. Pick up next Saturday. Stay tuned.
