I know there are tank sludge cleaners available at HD and Lowes.
But do any members have some good advice on this topic?

The reason I ask is that I just replaced my oil feed line from the tank to the boiler.
The old one was kinked in more than a few spots and full of sediment.
There is a filter at the tank. I'm thinking about adding a Gar-ber spin-on mount and filter at the boiler.

Moderator: move this to the Lounge if it is more appropriate there.

    Sorry about the delay.
This product is more than just what it says on the label. I’ve had a number of diesel and fuel oil problems over the years and this 4 in 1 treatment works on things far beyond what the label indicates.

Now I know there are numerous recipes floating around that may work for your needs - perhaps not. MMO and mineral spirits is great and works so often, try this for your current situations. FPPF brand is easy to find, if you have any troubles I’ll send some to you, I have cases of this stuff.

FPPF HOT 4 into 1 concentrated heating oil treatment
    Totally disperses water
    Controls waxing and gelling. 256FD53E-2EB3-4781-8171-358B908C1943.png
    Cleans pumps and filters
    Cleans burner tips stabilizes fuel
    Promotes clean flame
    Reduces smoke.
I’ve had some very dirty clogged lines and this works
    like Liquid Draino
    Eliminates soot.
    Removes varnish
    Prevents corrosion

Addressing an add on spin on filter. You should be fine with the one filter at the tank as long as it’s a new filter cartridge is installed on a regular bases. When I had oil heat I changed filters with every tank full (>200 gallons) or if the tank full sat for too long I would change it at the beginning of the heating season.

You can get this “HOT 4 into 1” through your local HVAC supplier, but Walmart and Amazon will be cheaper.

Btw, I use this for diesel fuel in my truck, it’s safe. When there is a problem add one 16 oz bottle to a tank full of fuel otherwise it will treat 125 Motor, to 250 gals in home heating oil tank.

Pm me with your info if you want me to send it to you, no charge.

Thanks, you don't have to do that. But I have seen great reviews of that brand.
I should have gotten a fuel oil delivery today. Yesterday I dumped in a full quart container of this:
which is 2X what is recommended on the bottle. It says to dump it in prior to a refill so that it can mix with the agitated oil.
I only go through 1/2 - 3/4 tank of oil all winter. And that is with a 54 year old boiler. I have the system serviced every 2 years.
I plan to dump a 1/2 bottle in at each fill-up from now on.
I have read that the oil we used to get decades ago from Iran was really clean and looked like cooking oil. The oil we now get from the US
is dirty compared to the Iran stuff, which is why people are now having problems related to this US oil.
I'm going to add the Gar-ber filter at the boiler. Not that I need it, I would just feel better having it. Besides, it's not expensive
and I can install it myself.
