how many guys have at least one extra engine or transmission, other than the ones that came in their cars?
Ive found its almost insane to try to do all the modifications on a cars engine and drive train, that you may at least occasionally use as transportation, and especially if you do it in stages that require it remain 100% drive-able and dependable while you do numerous upgrades.
while its true many guys obviously have a weekend toy for a project car, just so they don,t have to depend on their toy for transportation, thats not always an option due to space, cash flow or parking concerns, but you surely won,t be the first guy to have a spare engine or transmission, you work on, while you drive your project car, with what may not be your dream engine or drive train, powering that car while you buy and assemble a second performance engine to the power level you really want!. but I MUST POINT OUT! its so much easier to do work on an engine while its on an engine stand and once you get all the mods done , only then do you swap engines in your weekend toy, thus your down time waiting on parts that don,t ship on schedule, or machine-shops that fail to meet promised delivery dates has far less effect on your ability to drive the weekend toy or project car!
most of us have dealt with machine shops that have not met the expected due dates or even some that ruined components, parts that were ordered that did not show when expected or had un-expected break downs that required major drive train surgery, more extensive than the common u-joint failures or clutch replacements most hot rodders become familiar with thru necessity
BETWEEN work sessions, keep the engine in a dry reasonably warm area up on the engine stand

(1) spray machined surfaces with oil

(2) use an engine protective bag and DUCT TAPE

Re: how many guys have at least one extra engine or transmis

I have 3 engines, 2- 5.0, 1-5.7 and 2- 700r4. But only one 5.0 is ready to install soon as spring weather will stick around. By the way I told you about my 5.7 smoking because of a bad valve guide. Well I got the 5.0 ready to go in and in the mean time switched from 5-30 oil to 20-50 in my truck and the smoke is almost none existent now. Going to pull it out anyway.

please take lots of clear pictures and post a brief description on each as you proceed so others can learn from the process as your go thru it.

Re: how many guys have at least one extra engine or transmis

I have 3 complete 350's one short block and one bare block. 2 turbo 350's 1-700r4 and 1-200r4. I need to come up with a better way of storing them as they are always in the way.

you can look over this particular design made from what looks to be 2" angle iron thats usually cheap and easy to locate locally and weld up your own storage dolly's
or if you think it thru, you may find just buying a couple extra engine stands is a better value in the long run because you can rather easily either buy those and resell them later or work on the engines easier, just remember to oil them down with some oil in the oil pan and squirt some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and use a storage bag and duct tape to limit exposure to moisture

temporarily remove spark plugs and squirt a few tablespoons of marvel mystery oil into each cylinder and spin the engine over by hand to lube and coat the upper cylinders with oil to reduce rust and then replace the plugs finger tight, back off the rockers so the valve springs and valve train are not under load tape the exhaust ports with duct tape, and place a few taped garbage bags or a decent engine storage bag around the engine to reduce rust forming. place the engine stand in a fairly dry and well ventilated area.
