Howdy

Howdy Grumpy and others,

Many of y'all probably already know me from ChevyTalk. I've browsed here many times when Grumpy posts a link to a helpful article, figured I've been putting off registering for long enough, so here I am! :)

Glad to see you joined, we can always use another opinion !!! Here....... opinions are NOT like assholes, we want a different perspective.

welcome to the site, and if youve got any projects, pictures of your cars, shop, good tips or info that may help others, or questions please post them

I'll be doing the adjustable rocker conversion and other work on that 1996 7.4 (Vortec, Gen VI) in the next day or so, depending on when parts arrive. It's bone stock now, 240K hard miles, loudly ticking valvetrain and major injector/regulator issues. It went from running strong (but noisy, and hard warm starts) to barely gets out of its own way. Stumbling, misfiring, backfiring in the mufflers under load. Fuel pressure is good (and pump is only about a 5K mile Delphi unit.)

As usual, I'll take pics as the job progresses. Those of you from Chevytalk, FullsizeChevy, etc. have probably seen the 3500HD project truck in question. Started with a near-junk 1994 3500HD that was originally a 6.5 turbo diesel, now has a 1996 Vortec 7.4 and all associated wiring, PCM, etc. swapped in for a factory type installation without hacking.

Hey Grump, where should I post this? It'll be fuel and valvetrain related, but also troubleshooting related to ignition and other sensors...I looked over the section list and couldn't decide which would be the best place.

ID check the cam and lifters along with the rest of the valve train when you get time because its sounds like a combo of problem areas

I'm hoping like hell the cam and lifters are OK, especially based on that they're roller. No time to tear this engine down past what I'm already doing, until we have another truck to take its place. You know the deal...small business + downtime = disaster!

Dammit Randy!

I SHOULD be too busy to spend time on forums lately, but at the moment I'm sitting on my hands, waiting for UPS. The truck is running bad enough I figure it's going to lay down on us pretty soon if it doesn't get some real attention.

Monday - order parts from Summit and Five-O Motorsports; UPS 2-day and Fedex 2-day service from each, respectively (using the services they provide; not my choice on either.)

Wednesday - Fedex arrives 11AM, no honk, no knock, no bell ring - secretary sitting literally 4 feet from the front door, I'm in next office over, Nick outside washing the dog; they stick a notice on the door and take off. At 12 I check the door for notices just in case, good thing I did. Called and raised a little hell, they sent a message to the driver who called to say he'd be there "any minute" - about 2PM...showed up at 4:30PM.

In the meantime, UPS showed 2PM or so, pulled up to the gate and honked like they should. Figuring hey at least I can do the rockers while waiting on the injectors to arrive. No. Box contains the rocker kit and fuel pressure regulator, not the stud kit or valve cover gaskets. No plenum gaskets as well so I couldn't do the injectors if I wanted to. Check the invoice - shipped separately.

Called Summit to get tracking #, they give me the # for the package that was already delivered. I didn't check it though as they said the other package would be here same day. Yeah. By 5PM when it didn't show is when I discover they gave us the wrong tracking #. Called back and got correct one, find out from UPS package will NOT be delivered same day. Adverse weather blamed! That's their excuse! They're backlogged because of the weather in other areas, and our box is sitting in a container, right here in Corpus. No estimates of delivery time except "sometime Thursday."

Yeah. Rockers I can't install because of no studs or valve cover gaskets. Fuel injectors and regulator I can't install because of no plenum gaskets. Yes, I could just go score the plenum gaskets locally but then I'd have an extra set I don't need, and I'd rather knock all the work out at once.

Sorry for the late-morning bedtime story, but it was time to vent! RAWR!

your story about parts not showing up as promised is hardly rare in fact its common, that's why Ive always suggested having two separate engines (and usually transmissions) if its a weekend toy or your dependent on the car/truck for transportation etc.
so you can putts around with one drive train, while driving the other, until you have a free weekend to swap engines or drive trains.
(which with two guys and practice seldom takes more than a single day or at most a single week end)
thus minimizing and down time.
BTW machine shops that promise work being done on time but fail to meet schedules are just or even more common
