I have a little time left to alter my factory order with John Deere. This is getting pricey as I feel somethings are worth owning rather than going through the tool rental companies later, paying and putting up all that accompanies the rental routines.
The backhoe on my order is bothering me as I am not quite sure it’s worth the nearly $12,000 price tag.
Not ever having one, I have nothing to draw upon for useful experience.
I’m trying to come up with reasons I’ll need a backhoe. I do have a few daydreams on projects I’d like to do that will require a footing for a fireplace/chimney, a wish list 2 car garage footings and possible small stump removal. Perhaps some tasks can be done in other ways, this is my learning curve.
A trackhoe could be easier to dig stretches of trenches. Mini trackhoes rent for $500 plus per day with a trailer, but I’ve had shit happen that cost me more that wasn’t expected. Weather, breakdowns after hours or weekends, and times of illness causing extra time needed.

Pros - I’ll get most if not all of the cost back in the future when I selling.
It’s there whenever I want or need it.
Based on current rental costs it pays for its self with approximately 20 to 25 days of use.
No rear balast weights needed When using the front loader.

Cons - Costs at least $12,000 now
Always have to unload to use the 3 point PTO For other implements or accessories.
Must have heaver duty trailer to carry extra weight.
Compared to a trackhoe, Must sit outside of cab to operate
Compared to a trackhoe, Must reposition for every 7 linear ft. of trenchwork

Feel free to throw in your 2 cents.

I have several added options on my kobota, 4 wheel drive ,
a front hydraulic loader bucket, a rear deck 60" mower and a 60" box blade
they all pay for themselves fairly quickly

Living in the country and owning property you will find more and more uses for the hoe and you wont want to kick yourself in the a$$ every time that happens and you get to learn to operate the hoe

When you build you're garage build it big enough to put the John Deere in it because you will never get rid of it

Ray, you’re completely correct. I’m just trying to justify the $12K expense. I have been collecting all the hard to get parts, those that have been on backorder all year for everyone.

I’ve topped $75,000 now. The guy up in MI , Good Works Tractor supplies is one everone in the tractor world knows and he has hundreds of YouTube videos, keeps saying the backhoe is a waste of money.

Upgraded front bucket to heavy duty with pre drilled holes along bottom for scraper and teeth, chain hooks and ball hitch.
Bora wheel spacers
Rim Guard liquid wheel weight
Extensive ammount of LED lights spots and flood lights
post hole digger and 12” auger
power grappler
power beyond
Forth and Fifth function
york rake
drag box
7 ft snow blade hydraulic angles
Air ride seat
iMatch quick connect
power thumb for bucket
Back up camera
Forward Camera'
Tiller
Flail mower ( instead of a brushhog)
Pallet Forks
Stump bucket
Spreader for salt, lime pellets and fertilizers

That‘s another set of questions. No size is ever big enough and anything I build will be too small after its built.

my 40 x 75 shop was big enough untill the wife decided that all the old furniture she ever owned needed to be saved,
when I moved about 90% got given away, burnt or put out at the curb

If you don't go ahead and get one soon, I'm afraid you will miss out on any tractor at all.

Don't let the money amount bother you as it will soon disappear when it all goes digital and the Govment will decide if you need one.

Things right now are hard to get and 3-4 times more expensive all because we the people let it happen with China and wanted cheaper goods not made with US labor.

Oh, I set out very serious this past February to buy a new Kioti. Not having what I wanted, telling me they had a few on order since last fall - expecting one anytime now, and then having 2 - 5% price increases inside of 2 weeks, I walked.

Kubota dealers have nothing in the NorthEast and if they could get a tractor, the loaders and backhoes are on back order until further notice. They estimated 6 months waiting.
Early April I put a deposit on a John Deere 3033R and the dealer said the factory confirmed the order with a July ship date. The store stated that they have been getting orders ahead of schedule so I might see it in June.

Thers’s always the chance that new crap happens, delays or more shortages.

This is like ordering a new vehicle. If you don’t get some option then after you get it you wish you did! I desided you buy once, cry once and you never regret the purchase, but you always regret not purchasing.

I’ll bite the bullet and get everything up front. I want to start getting implements and accessories now to catch a few good deals, but it’s always in the back of my mind - what if JD doesn’t come through? If I find out it’s months more waiting? Then I would have to go back to the drawing board and look again at what can be had from inventory.

They lied to me!

I called the dealer this morning asking for any update to my order. Nobody was in so I got the sales manager. When the owner placed my order several months ago he said the factory confirmed the order and no restrictions with either the loader or the backhoe with a proposed ship date of mid July. The store’s owner went as far as saying they way orders have been coming, my tractor may come earlier.
Today they say looking back through all the messages it never said anything other than August 22nd.
Trying to say it was me that got it wrong, yeah - I guess my subconscious heard something else (I think not!).

That’s 2 more months now. I guess that’s their hook, look like you can deliver faster than your competitors.

well at least they didn't say they don.t remember cashing your deposit check, or you ordering anything?

If nothing in any brand is what you want in stock now, then hope for the best and hope that in the fine print you forfiet your deposit.

They don’t even have lawn tractors in stock, no large zero turn mowers. I wanted to go back and get a ZTR975 in 72” and I was told if I ordered now I may get it late winter, nothing used anywhere but private crap on Craigs list.

I did the deposit over the phone purposely for a reason. They said the deposit is refundable but even if their contracts state otherwise, it‘s sucks to be them because I never received or signed any contract. Keep note of that little bit of info.

The very next order after mine (the same week) has a ship date of September 28th for the same tractor.

I called around just to see if the picture changed anywhere. Kubota had more price increases and now its with $2,000 of a near apples to apples compareable to a John Deere. When you factor the incentive programs they are within a few hundred dollars of each other. The big ticket implements and accessories of JD run about 15% higher.

For what I must have there isn’t anything used on any JD or Kubota lot in the tri-state region. More importantly, the used tractors are barely 10% less - closer to 5% less than new. And for sure I don’t want to buy something somebody learned on or has little or no warranty remaining.

Back in the first week of April, Kubota dealers had me submit my name to a waiting list and when it became resonable to believe ordering would be possible to get a tractor within 2 to 3 months they would contact me for a deposit. Nearly 3 months later and I haven’t moved on any list. Again, nothing I would settle for in a used machine anywhere on dealer. lots.

I could get a lessor brand and have it now, but I would be lossing resale value later. Besides, the spread between a Kioti, Mahindra, New Holland, LS, Tractor King or a Yanmar is only $3,000 to $4,000 less and they don’t have much of any incentive programs - and the biggest of all . . . .none are as good as a John Deere

Zero turns out the wazoo here in NC. Don't know about tractors as I just bought a Super A with all the equipment including a 5 foot bush hog and a 5 foot disc plus plows and cultivators, fertilizer. attachment and front wheel weights for *3 ,000.

I will buy things that make it easier for me to get the job done.

Think long think wrong, buy when you see it as it will be gone tomorrow.

Wait - What‘s a Super A? Do you have a picture? $3,000 sounds like a steel, I never see things like this! A friend was with me for a late breakfast one Monday morning last year. As we were walking out to the car this guy stops dead in front of us and asks Herman if he is interested in a condo really cheap but it’s got to be fast and cash. In a split second Herman says sure!
Turns out, this guy‘s mother just died, he wants to leave the area - in days. He has a 2 bed, 2 bath condominium a few miles away he’ll let go for $100,000 (it was worth $200,000). A title search and a few documents signed, Herman doubled his money by Friday that same week.

By the way, you’re not the first person that I heard from in NC that said there’s plenty of machines around. In the North East the value brands have plenty of stock sitting available. But even within those brands the commercial level segments are thin pickings.

Everyone has been sending me listings of things for sale on FB and they are always in the deep south and far north. Things have to turn around soon. Interest rates skyrocketing at recordbreaking speed, home sales is already cooling down, new home construction orders are slowing. Stimulus money is dwindling, people are going into work, back to paying for big weddings and taking vacations. Consumer debts are rising, credit card debt is once again at new record highs so watch - construction material inventory will grow, prices will adjust downward and contractors will become available as spending slows. What this country needs is a good hard recession. Let the dollar fall so our goods, services and real estate are attractive buys for those abroad. Bring back competition and things will improve.

Now if only we could ship all those lazy millennials to Canada!

Now if only we could ship all those lazy millennials to Canada!

they should love Canada, as its controlling party slides ever further into the depths of ever deeper government control over its SUBJECTS

I don’t know much about Canada since we used to spend some time at a place far north of Alberta to beat the hot July days for a week. This is going back 15 years ago. We shared a duplex cabin with a Jersey couple until one day they stopped the guy with me from entering.

We learned that Canada doesn’t let anyone cross the boarder that has ANY criminal record whatso ever. This poor guy had a DUI 10 plus years before and they wouldn’t let him in. Canada doesn’t let anyone with anything, even a misdemeanor level, non-violent, non drug related cross over. They run your name through NCIC (think thats it) and everything pops up.
He looked like he was kicked in the family jewels when CBP flagged him, we never saw Nick after that.
