if you were looking for a used crew cab 4x4 ,or similar SUV, what year, brand and features would you be looking for?
Id love to find a decent deal on a full size crew cab (4 door) 4x4 truck, or SUV I purchased a 2003 avalanche as my parts chaser and family truck, back in 2004, but when my younger kid left home it went with him!
now Id give my kids anything I can afford, but getting along without a parts chaser truck is a major P.I.T.A.
as a corvettes not ideal for parts transports, of large bulky and greasy, parts, or trips to machine shops and salvage yards or for out of state elk hunts either.
I owned a full size ford 4x4 bronco back in 1996 that was great!
Ive owned a f350 truck with a topper that taught me that an open bed truck has some advantages, the f350 ford I had was ok,but mileage sucked, at about 12 mpg, the avalanche was good, getting about 20mpg,it was more comfortable and drove easier, but all those trucks are now long gone from my garage.
so what gets semi decent mileage,(at least 18mpg highway) is dependable, has 4x4 optional drive and can be found at a semi reasonable price?

I just realized that this post is over a year old, but I reply just to see what you ended up doing/getting.
i can only recommend exactly what I have been driving for years now, a 2006 Silverado LT HD2500 Crew Cab. Good price partially because it's the previous generation but the power is almost the same at 365 hp/685 tq. Crazy power can be had just by tuning -example: somebody with programing skills and diesel knowledge can reprogram the cpu and increase hp & tq over 50%. If not, well I have the Gale Banks 6 gun and have a safe 200 hp/ 350 tq more than when I started.

Im still looking , but finances are preventing me from getting too seriously involved currently, and have yet to find a smoking deal, which because of financial considerations is mandatory, (forced medical retirement due to serious injuries ,has its good points but cash flow is not one)

I didn't know you have a medical problem, does it prevent you from working on vehicals?
I have some severe medical problems as well. Yet to be diagnosed I have severe pain in both legs, cannot get up from sitting without extreme pain, cannot bend my knees while standing and I chew on pain killers like they are pezz candies. Getting in and out of a vette right now is impossible. If I didn't have a car lift at home I couldn't think of working on a car! The part that sucks is getting down and up when I have to adjust the lift arms under the car.

Back to the truck. I built (with help) a 1985 Chevy 2500 with 4X4. Transplanted an early LS motor and converted to CNG. At the time I wasn't able to complete the list of nickel and dime repairs so my friend took it off my hands for what I had into it. He always brags that he gets 22 mpg (conversion to per unit) when reg. gas is $3.80/gal. CNG is $2.15

Here is what I paid. 1985 4X4 std. cab, 8ft bed. 3/4 ton on craigs list $1,500
LS with trans and cpu, wire harness, 72K miles on cl $2,500
CNG full kit with larger 18 gal tank $6,700
Misc. bits and pieces $ 700
$11,400

I retired due to a slip & fall accident that busted my knee and ankle and dislocated some back vertebra, Ive got pins and screws in my ankle and knee and have had several surgery s and while I can still get around, I can,t stand or walk for more than 20-30 minutes at a time, so its not like Im totally screwed but Im not nearly as flexible or nearly as able to do stuff with cars as I once was. which just means it requires 3-4 times longer to do stuff, but hey, Im retired
