just curious guys

are there any areas of engine builds we have discussed or not covered fairly well or areas you might care to discuss in more detail ?
now I have a good deal of experience, with several types of engines, and racing in several cars, but obviously theres a huge range, but theres other gentlemen on the site with much more experience in some areas, like welding, rear differentials , body, interior , paint, upholstery, ignition, etc so lets get everyone's input here, on what they want to know more about and what they might be really good at, because I know theres lots of guys that know more than I do in many areas.!

BTW I spend easily 80% of my time on this site researching and adding links, correcting mistakes I find, trying to use spell check, and adding info you gentlemen might find useful to older threads, because it makes zero sense to require you to look thru a couple hundred threads for scattered bits of info, like most other sites require you to do, if I can place as much info as possible in a few related threads thus concentrating the resource and reducing your need to search.
...yes this means that new info is not always posted in a new thread, and a thread you read thru 7-18 months ago may have a great deal more info and more links included in it now

Its time to contribute to your forum Grumpy with some actual project builds.
Step by step, night by night. Apply the knowledge and build a finished product.

I plan on contributing this year with a Dana 60 rear differential build destined for a C4 BBC Vette.

One of my own 1957 Pontiac 9.300 rears to build for my C4.
Complete my 410 sbc and install.
425 Olds street performance build for my 63 Pontiac Gp.

I have a few Turbo 400's and a 1988 c4 700R4 I want to rebuild also.
And a bigger garage I want to build from the ground up.
Plenty to do in 2013.

There is something I would like to learn more of Grumpy.
The relationship between cylinder head airflow & exact cylinder head seat angles used & valve face angles & valve face back cuts.
I never have read a comprehensive article on this subject.
Valve face angles & seat angles are sometimes deviated from the standard 45 degrees.
Pontiac & Oldsmobile used 30 degree intake seat angles.
Race applications sometimes use 50 to 55 degree seat angles.
Exact angles used are closely guarded secret by the top 10 professional engine builders in the world.

David Vizzard touched on the subject of cylinder head airflow characteristics & different valve face angles & valve backcuts.

A few engine builders have told me in the past, done right its worth another 20 to 50 Hp at the flywheel peak, and torque numbers are up everywhere in the engines usable power band.

Grumpy,

Can we have a discussion on Modern ATF transmission fluids & compatibilty with older transmissions like a GM 700R4, Turbo 350, Turbo 400, Mopar 727 Torque Flite, Ford C4 & C6.
I have read in the past that original Dexron (1) was made from sperm whale oil. & was the very best ever made. Discontinued around 1976 others have told me.
I have had good success with Royal Purple Max ATF buts its very expensive today. When I rebuilt my 700R4 in my 87 Vert, that's what I used. Purchased a 5- gallon container of it from my local speed shop f r a deal of $200. Much more now.
I have been using Casterole GTX Dextron- Mercon in my 1994 Suburban 4L60E trans.
Any personal recommendations ?
Many say all ATF's are the same. I strongly disagree with that statement.

Hey Big....very timely question for me also, since I will need to buy about 14 quarts of something for my 200-4R trans rebuild.

About a year ago when I did a complete change (14 Qts) of fluid in my Buick Park Avenue I went with the Valvoline Pure Synthetic Dexron VI, I can't say that I can feel much difference in the way it shifts, but it's suppose to last longer before it depleats all the additives. I've noticed that many of the different brands will say something like "Synthetic Blend", Valvoline is the only one I've noticed that seems to be 100%. I'm sure there are others, just haven't come across them.

I did some research this morning and found some info on the testing that is done to qualify for Dexron VI.

Royal Purple Max ATF is full sysnthetic too like the Vavoline Pure synthetic Dex VI.

I should have maybe stated my question better Rick.
What ATF's have the highest friction modifiers that allow for lightning fast shifts hot or cold weather driving & provides superb anti wear & corrosion protection ?
I used to use Ford type F ATF for years.
Not so easy to find now. Been superseded by other labeling.
I have noticed also Rick, many ATF's provide silky smooth shifts.

Yes something like that Rick.
But 100 % mineral grade. Keep purchase costs down.
For my 1994 Suburban. & 1963 GP with a Turbo 400 I installed.
Interesting articles you came up with.
Read them & Grumpys.
Prefer lightning fast shifts & don't mind some harshness many would object too. Like original mineral grade Ford Type F ATF provided.

Royal Purple Max ATF is fantastic. Just has gotten real expensive in last 1 year. Some want $18 bucks per quart.
Never knew friction modifiers could intentionally be left out of ATF during manufacturing. I assumed it was always present in ATF formulation & different types were added to give unique shift characteristics & meet OEM requirements.
Redline ATF has to be pricey like Royal Purple, competitors in the Synthetic race oil business.

You probably noticed this when you read the link in my post above, but for the rest of the members.....

Going with your request to have quick shift, this graph would indicate that the Ford Type ATF or an unmodified fluid would be best for your needs. I went back to see when that book was published and it's fairly recent.....Oct 2011.

Thanks Rick.

Autozone has Type F fluid in stock.
But a strange off brand name to me, COASTEL.
Checked their website earlier today.

Prefer names like Casterole GTX, Vavoline, Penzoil, Havoline, Shell Rotella.
Check my parts stores local & Wally world.
Let you know what I find for available Type F mineral grade ATF.
