The original base 69 Corvette was retailing for $4,780 at its unveiling.
This price tag brought a fully-featured base model, whose front fenders had engine cooling vents
keep in mind back in 1969 you could buy an L88 crate engine for about $1599 from chevy
but back then I was making about $120 a week.
L88 Specs Index
- Horsepower: 430 hp @ 5,200 rpm
- Torque: 460 lb./ft. @ 4,000 rpm
- Compression Ratio: 12.5:1
- Displacement: 427 cubic inches
- Cylinder Bore: 4.25” (108 mm)
- Stroke: 3.76” (95.2 mm)
Vehicle
keep in mind the L88 big block corvette technology is vastly outdated.(yes I was at SEBRING FLA in 1967) the engine was factory rated at 430 hp, the much less powerful 427 tri power engine was rated at 435hp, L71 so only the really knowledgeable racers selected that option, while the chevy dealers sold a ton of tri-power big block corvette to those guys that had the cash, but were probably clueless as to the true power potential, of both engines.
the GRANDSPORT corvettes that raced in NAUSSA, were highly modified small blocks, many were eventually re-engined with 377 cubic inch engines (400 block/350 crank) for racing, but by 1967 the big block L88 corvette was firmly favored for racing due to the much improved torque and hp, that easily over came the engines noticeably increased weight of about 100 extra lbs,
the 1967-1969 big block L88 corvette were and are now very expensive
when the L88 corvette VS the AC cobra racing was going on,
back in the mid to later 1960s the L88 engines after minor mods probably produced right around 550 plus hp
the cobras and corvette duels were fought on road race course, and both were factory modified to be significantly lighter in weight ,
than the production cars sold to the public, keep in mind at the time
"WIN RACES ON SUNDAY RESULTS IN INCREASED SHOWROOM SALES ON MONDAY"
was the firmly believed mind-set / montra that helped drive both cars sales
with todays much improved heads, cam shaft and valve train technology and a stroker kit that brings displacement to 496 cubic inchs , a good EFI induction and tunned headers 750 plus hp is very easy to surpass.
