learning by getting in over your head in projects

One skill youll find useful is when you find a part thats failed, step back and look it over and try to figure out WHY it failed, rather than just replacing it, and assuming its the only thing that needs to be done, when parts fail theres usually a reason, yes parts wear out but thats not the only reason parts fail.
My brother-in laws 1974 corvette has had the power steering hoses from the power steering pump start leaking and need replacing twice in only about 1500 miles, he did the previous repair work, but ask me to help this time. so I put the car up on the lift and had him stay in the car and run the steering wheel back and forth between lock top lock and very quickly located the source of his problems, he ad failed to tighten a few connections and the hoses were dragging across a couple suspension or frame components which rapidly wore thru the rubber hydraulic hose, simply checking visually while the suspension and steering was turned easily located the source of the problem.
we ordered new hoses so all that required is to install new hoses and install them in a orientation where they won,t rub on other suspension parts or moving components.
We all learn by screwing things up ,at least occasionally, but you would assume that if you see an area on a hydraulic hose thats worn significantly that you might look around the area, as its obviously caused by contact with something

I recently replaced the drivers window regulator on my wifes 2003 mercury

one thing I found out during the repair process is that I eventually needed to both ordered the repair replacement parts, and look up on line all the videos and instructions I could locate on the subject before I started.
that mercury window regulator repair process was more involved than doing a similar repair on most G.M. products but thru experience I know that course of action(looking up instructions and related videos) generally reduces the frustration and time lost while doing a repair Ive never done before.
doing the repair took more time than several similar jobs Id done in the past. this repair which included several trips to the local hardware store for some rather uncommon fasteners , used on completing the repair, was required due to fords extensive use of 1/4" diam, rivets of several lengths that required removal and replacement with bolts and washers and nyloc fasteners, taught, me once more that you should never count the fasteners you need and only buy that many, you should always buy extras because youll need them for various reasons.
I counted originally the rivets removed, during the failed part removal, thinking that would be all that were required but the new replacement part bracket required several changes, and of course I assumed the replacement bolts should be similar in length, which was not the case, I eventually need three different length fasteners , and a longer set of punches and a long bit to drill out the aluminum rivets. the repair was not all that difficult but it was time intensive due to making extra trips for fasteners, so on the third trip, to the hard ware store , I broke down and bought a dozen extra of each size bolt and a few extra dozen nuts, washers and fasteners over and above what I thought might be required as the expense was far less than making repeated trips keep in mind that i have a 5 gallon bucket of extra bolts in random sizes pulled from past projects and salvage yards yet you just never seem to have the correct fastener needed, I don,t think if I had 5 spare buckets of bolts,screws and clips I would be immune from those occasional trips to the local hard ware and auto parts stores, it would just take longer before i decided I didn,t have what i needed as i search thru them.
