now theres darn few tools that get ignored as much as modeling clay,
by new mechanics, and yet it is as common, as a wrench in older mechanics tool boxes, as is modeling clay.
the stuffs really useful for checking some clearances

example
need
to know how much
piston to valve clearance you've got?
rocker to valve cover?
need to know, what your
air filter to hood clearance, is?
oil pan floor to oil pump pick-up clearance?
tire to frame clearance at lock to lock in a turn?
need to know how far the pinion snuber comes up and gets compressed to the floor boards on hard shifts?
how close the oil pan really comes to the drag links?
a bit of clay placed in certain locations , retrieved and carefully measured can help find you the answer?

i used to use either peanut butter, or plumber's putty, depending on application.

worked fine.

can you tell i am from a construction background?

i also used to use syringes from my baby's medicines to measure cc's in cyl heads. was quite accurate if you took your time.

those babies are now 21 and 19, making lots of turbo HP ontheir own.
