new engine is hard to turn over at times

GRUMPYVETTE?
My cars been running pretty good so far this season. Which is really good because I can't really work on it, had back surgery in March so I'm VERY VERY limited in what I can do. The more I drive it the better it runs, it really does, it's great. We rebuilt the complete drive train last year, engine, trans. and rear end. Only have about 300 miles or so on the rebuilt components.

My son and I took it out Saturday for a while. We made a few stops and everything seemed fine. After the last stop we made, the engine didn't want to turn over right away when I went to start it. It made that real slow rer, rer, rer noise, like a dead battery in the winter. Then I let off the ignition key and tried it again. It turned over really slow again, then fired right up like nothing was wrong. It did the same thing twice last season.

My coolant temp. was about 185°, my volt gauge reads 14 to 15 volts while the engine is running. My engine has pretty low compression at 9.1:1. My initial timing is set at 14° at idle (vacuum advance unplugged). My starter and solenoid were brand new last season. I have full length headers. IIRC, my battery has 500 CCA. I don't know if I should get a higher CCA battery or a remote starter solenoid. What do you guys think?

its most likely either the starter or ignition timing related but..because this is a new engine thats barely broken in yet, theres a very slight chance, that
if you gaped your rings on the tight end of the acceptable tolerance the engine heat might be allowing the ring ends to touch greatly increasing the drag or ring to bore friction, every time the engines run the rings wear a bit, the gap tends to open very slightly and the car runs better due to lower ring drag friction.
I usually only see that occur when guys have installed rings right out of the box without verifying the ring end gap tolerance
Id also want to know your bearing clearances and oil pressure because theres a extremely low chance those are too tight to allow easy engine rotation.

a heat shield on the starter may help
