No AC!

I think you'd have a lot of custom bracket fabrication to do in order to mount an AC compressor on the spray lubed era 6's. Probably cost 4 grand or more by the time you got a system installed.

I wouldn't do it. No demand for those cars and the small group of potential buyers are dying off.

I don't know why I remember this but the reality TV Show "Hard Parts: South Bronx" added A/C to a circa 1950 Chevy Styleline!!

Thanks
Randy

For some reason some of what I typed was knocked off when I uploaded the photo. It said my brother in law wants a post war, pre shoebox Style Chevy but has to have AC.
I suggested installing a sbc and get a vintage AC system, however his budget is capped at $20,000. He needs a cheaper car but it's not going to be this clean unless he can catch one at a specialized car auction.

I could Do It Richard.
Along with Ed.

Use a Classic Air Kit or Vintage Air.

Just to Fab the one off A/C brackets from 304 Stainless steel & 6061 T-6 Aluminum about $550-600.00.
I would have to have Bob Machine up a One off Billet Steel Crank & Water pump pulley. $300.00

Do it all install Turn key A/C.
$2,000.00 total labor estimate.

Its a Full pressure lube 6 cylinder Chevy 6.

A good engine.
Best GM Had till the 1966 Pontiac OHC 6-cylinder came out. Worked best in the light 1967 Pontiac Firebird OHC 4-BBL.

Another option is to swap in an Early Cadillac V8 or Oldsmobile 371 J2 Tripower Engine.
Both period correct and done often back in the day by Hotrodders.
Caddie & Olds had V8 OHV before CHEVY.

Cheapest and easiest low cost is to drop in a Cadillac 500 Or Olds 425-455 engine complete with accessory brackets.

I worked on a 1974 Cadillac 500 Eldorado last Saturday .
Did a Full ignition tuneup.
The Factory Radiator is Huge.
5-core unit Brass & Copper.

The in law wants to spend his bonus check. I keep telling him $20,000 doesn't buy any great classic or muscle car except perhaps an unfinished project. He could get a nice early C5 or a late model Camaro

Its only worthwhile if he is a Veteran Mechanic like me.
If he can do without A/C its worthwhile .
Factory A/C on GM was not comman place till after 1970.

I would not buy a C5 unless its real low milage.
Electrical electronics issues are commen with them now on top of mechanical issues.

Was there any good year/s for C5's ? I'm not up on any of the known problems associated with the 5th generation.

If he is not concerned with Astetics Richard there is another way to install A/C into the 1950 Chevy.
Go on ebay and find a Vintage Aftermarket Under the Dash A/C kit.
Should be $500 or so to get it done.

2005 is a C6 LS2. I thought there was some more refinements with the LS1 in later years but the 03 and 04 were identical?

What is the difference between "vintage air" and "classic air?"

Classic Air I think has been around longer. Patro recommends on Digital Corvette I have seen in his thread.

Vintage Air Wiz Recommends .

Since Patro is a Veteran Mechanic and a retired HVAC Guy And he likes Classic air I think I would buy a Classic Air.

I see they are no 700R4 transmission experts left on Digital Corvette.
None are able to Diagnose the Chevy Elcamino 700R4 3-4 Upshift issue .
Wiz is not such a Wiz after all.
Not a Rebuilder Mechanic like me here.
A Parts changer.

Hardcore is a Rebuilder like me too.

There are No Real Mechanics left on DC.

Brian, I believe splash lubrication was used until 1953 !!!

Seems hard to believe today.

Thanks

I googled.
Your right Randy.
The 1950 Chevy has nice body lines.
$8,500 cash no more.
Take that 6-cylinder out & install a V8.
Roll that Chevy 6 splash & spray oil lube engine from a Top a nice big Hill.
Have Bam & Hillary at the bottom of the Hill.;)

It only has 4 main bearings too.
POS.

The Pontiac OHC 6 has 7 main bearings.
So does a modern Semi truck 900 ci 6-cylinder engine.
