The Township where I live is a little more than 32 square miles. In March, a nighttime aerial drone survey found 5440 deer within the boundaries of this Twnsp. Almost 170 per sq mi with some local areas reaching densities of 381 to 512 deer per sq mi. There’s only 3,783 people living within the township as per the last census. Each year for the past 7 out of 12 years - Deer have (indirectly) killed more people in the Twnsp than by any other means ',mmm . This is scary news!
To attempt to curb the deer population the Twnsp pays sharp shooters $267/deer, $30 to $60 per deer during recreational shooting and $300 to $1000 each to administer contraceptives, which by their own admission is not very effective.
I hate like hell to drive around here at nighttime. The corn fields are getting taller every day now and the deer just constantly pop their heads out and leap across the road when they know a car is coming!
