each design has its matched applications, and most designs work on most but not all applications
An oil filter wrench is designed to grip an otherwise slippery oil filter , or one where getting your hand around it is out of the question due to clearance issues or getting burned ,its used so that you can remove, and install a new one when changing your oil. any decent auto parts store or sears, harbor freight, etc. will have a selection

if you have a LIFT this will also be handy

never get under a car thats not supported safely on ramps or jack stands and it should have the rear wheels wedged/chalked and the emergency brakes engaged, to prevent the car rolling off the ramps or jack stands
