I,m trying to help my brother-in-law decide on a new truck, heres the basic requirements
OBVIOUSLY this is not going to be cheap, but try to keep costs low as you can

TRUE 4x4 drive train
4 door crew cab
locking hubs with all FOUR WHEELS transmitting power to the road
color RED with GRAY INTERIOR
automatic transmission
full length bed NOT A DUALLY, HATES DUAL REAR WHEELS
at least semi luxurious interior
back-up-camera
small V8 engine
radio & navigation
skid plates

NISSAN ?
DODGE ?
CHEVY ?
FORD ?
TOYOTA ?
ANY OTHER OPTIONS

A brand new 2014-2015 FORD F-250 XLT Super Duty 4X4.
Triton 5.4 V8.
5-speed auto trans standard.
Has the Heavy Duty Sterling Rear Diff stock.
May land a great deal on a 2013 FORD F-250 XLT. Dealer left over stock.

Datsun Be Ok.
But long gone.

Nissan sucks.
Oh what a feeling. Yota. Yuck.

Chevy.... No BBC. No thanks.

Dodge. So So.

FORD A OK GRUMPY.

Honda be OK But they don't build a Real Man's 4X4 pickup.
Fit Big 30-35 inch tall tires onto.

Sounds like older truck with modern convenience. Full time 4 X 4 is going to be best known as AWD (although that's probably not what your brother wants). The last maker with locking hubs was Jeep. This is a difficult one because of just one item and that's a full length bed. Crew cab and long bed was Dodge, before that it was International. 94 Silverado Denali had extend cab 4 wheel steering had AWD again a 6 bed. I know trucks and this is a custom job if he wants all these features. Brian, I don't think the newest Ford has full size bed and crew cab. Why the insistence on the old-school 4X4 system?

Just my experience what I work on the least.
Chevy only puts all the best into a Vette.

Now it's the new loaded Impala - close to $50,000 with everything.

i love he LS motors and the new gen V motors are awesome too... but ford makes a better truck. 04-08 f250 or 350 diesel would be my recomendation

The New Generation of Diesel Engines are Super Powerfull.
The Navistar Especially .
All by the Big 3 are Extrodiarily difficult to work on for big engine repairs when the time comes.
Too hard on Grumpy's aged body.
Its hard on mine at 44.
I have to crawl under the hood & Huddle into a Ball.
Work like that for Hours.

Or laying on my stomach.

Only buy a New Diesel if Serious long distance highway towing in mind.
Towing loads of 10,000-40,000lbs with trailer weight included.

My old 1994 K1500 Suburban 4X4 with 350 TBI & 6-Lugnut wheels

With 6- lugnut wheels , I have towed 10,000 Lbs with my Dual Axle Car Trailer easy.
I installed a Heavy Duty BBC 454 Radiator .
Like the old 4-cores. Big Mother .
Gets the job done.
A Gasoline 5.4 Triton in a Ford F250 4X4 Has more HP.

or you buy a diesel if your 23 years old live in the city put 6' or 8" stacks on it (cause of course you need a exhaust bigger that a tracor trailor), raise it so you can squeze 38 inch mudders on 20 inch wheels that never see the trails. Put a confederate flag back window wrap on it that says red neck. For got you need to crank the fuel pump up or buy a chip so you can "roll coal" leaving every stop light possible. My favorite!!!!

I second the Ford idea they are a nice comphortable truck don't think they still have the good ole manual lock hubs on any thing any more. I had an f150 with the triton it is a strong engine.

just a question, I know several 4x4 trucks come with only one front and one rear wheel actually providing power to the tires, most have an upgrade option that allows a limited slip rear tires so at least three tires can provide traction, but i know that true 4 wheel drive is available but not common without upgrades specifically ordered ,hes fine with only the two rear wheels powering the truck 90% of the time but wants the option to engage BOTH front wheels, either manually or with a switch, if required.

I ordered the optional posi rear so I have 3wheel traction.
Dodge (around the 70s) on manual hubs if you ordered the posi rear you had true 4 wheel drive. I think otherwise you'll have to go after market for a setup like the Rubicon TJ had. I'm on Jeepforum.com and there's 2 guys there that are specialists in off road racing in Cali - they'll know.

You have to install an Air Locker or Cable actuated Locker in the Front Differential Grumpy.
Either are Pricey. $600-1200 in parts.
It will provide 100% 4-wheel drive at all times.
Installs in the front or rear Diffs or both. Choice is yours.
If you want maual lockout hubs, have to find a used Chevy Front Dana 60.
Open knucke or closed knuckle. Ford & Dodge had them too.
Custom built Front Dana 60 's cost up $9 k.
Bolt in. Bite the bulllet
Or build it yourself.
I have used a cable actuated locker in a 1975 JEEP CJ5 Dana 30.
5.14 Gears. Excellent results.
No one in ILLINOIS would do it but me.
Project completed 2-1/2 Years ago.
Built the same time I put together 2 C4 Dana 44's on Corvette Forum.

I have neither the cash or need for a truck like hes looking for,
but it sure would be great if I had the finances available to look for something similar  :D

Common Ford suck, i really have a problem with ford
Almost every ford i see around, (even brand new one) will not start in the cold. always something to fix. Worst truck ever. Always behind a tow truck.
And the FORD automatic transmission is a real piece of shit.

I see more ford truck needing a jump start or a towing + expensive repair that any other make together.
Ford are overrated, i know am a ford hater... but i know what am seeing around.
+ ford are a pita to repair vs chevy and the parts are more expensive.
Ford rusting very quickly, rocker panel disappear.

Dodge not too bad, but for offroad bad suspension, chevy hold the road much better.
+ dodge have bad security quote.
Dodge is good for the cummin if he go diesel.

I say, he should get a old school chevy.. newer chevy truck not really good anyway.(and am a chevy fan)
or a dodge cummin if hes not planning on offroad alot and want something newer.

My sister is as certified machanic for a business that work in the wilderness/wood, heavy machinery and lots of diesel truck that spend all there time offroad and the guys are really hard on them..
And i know alot of dude that spend lot of time offroading, everyone of them with a ford hate these money pit... chevy all the way.

The Good Chevy Trucks had a 4 bolt Main 350 or a 454 Mathieu.
Turbo 400 4X4 Trans.
Older models had a Gear Drive Transfer case & Cast Iron casted case.
That alone lasted 50 years.
Fords just hold up around here better.
Chevies rust out faster.
They spray a Funny blue salt mix to de ice the roads.
The blue crap is made from corn.
Worse that old Salt. Sodium Chloride.

It was an OX Locker I used Grumpy.
I think the owner paid $800 for it.
Made nice though.
Real Solid Sand Cast Steel Cover that held the shift fork mechanism
Have pics around on one of the Laptops.
Try & find it & post when I can.

Yeah, since a few year, here, they started tripping on "white road" that mean no salt, they are using sand instead and doing so really rarly. so its almost 100% clean snow now.
A little more slippery(but with good winter tires wich are now mandatory by the law, its not a problem), but darn its much better for the vehicule body wich is a VERY good thing. Its not rusting as fast as it used to now. except for ford focus, i dont know what they did with the focus(around 2003), but all of them are rust bucket.(rocker panel completly gone, rust holes in fenders and doors...)

X2 on the air locker.

Another alternative for truck.. the army CUCV truck(solid front diff chevy truck).. i think it could be something interesting to look into.

Am sorry for my previous post, i have some intense frustration going today(wich rarely happen with me), and i really have a strong hate for ford, the 2 dont mixe well with me loll.
